I live in an area that is well-known as a major hog-hunting destination for big bucks corporate and showbiz peeps from the L A and SF areas. We have wild hogs all over the rural areas here. I have never once needed to pump a piggy full of lead. They run from humans, unless you antagonize them. But, if you need that sawed-off in your purse or whatevs, get down with your bad self. That is not a reason to carry a gun, though, unless you are on hunting property.

And, Vince is a dumb bum. No need to give his comments any attention. They're just NRA-fed talking points anyway.

It's nice to know that the hogs are nice and friendly in California. I wish they were like that here so I wouldn't have lost so many pets and livestock to them, and had so much of my property damaged or destroyed. Because of that we kill every one we see.

I don't like to carry anything but a beer/drink in my hand. Priorities. I have pockets for money so I don't need to carry a purse. No way in hell I'd be slinging a rifle around. I'd just as soon stay home if I feel the need to carry not one, but 2 guns in order to leave my house.

Same here. I've lived in all sorts of areas, from the totally safe (Orange County) to the somewhat scary (DC and Miami). I've never felt the need to arm myself when I head to the local cineplex. If that were the case, I would move.

I do understand people's fear of guns, though. They're deadly and anyone who owns one should be required to take a class on how to use them and know the laws around them.

What would make more sense is to encourage women to learn proper self-defence, incl. regular training on how to deal with knife and gun attacks (plus chokes, grabs etc). Sure, learning how to use a gun is useful, once you disarmed your opponent you wouldn't shoot yourself by accident.

Is a gun going to safe my life one day? Probably not. But it is does provide me with some sense of security.

Edited to add: I also have a fingerprint lockbox, it is easy to open (if you're the one with the fingerprints on the lock), otherwise impossible. I wish we lived in a world where guns didn't exist, but we do, and I refuse to give anyone a chance to make me a victim again, not without giving them a very serious run for their money anyway.
not trying to change anyone's mind, but as sluce said, it's a false sense of security. i was attacked by a masked robber with a gun, too, and know the feeling. i did think about getting an (illegal) tazer afterwards, but it wouldn't make any difference if the situation was to happen again. life isn't like in the movies, you won't act like clint eastwood heroically shooting the bad guy in the heat of the moment. you'll most likely end up getting shot yourself.

I feel that it's just as much my right to be able to be safe without worrying about the weekend warrior next to me deciding when it's time to pull his piece. How is my right to safety any different? Let's face it, not everyone with a gun should have a gun and not everyone that has a concealed weapon will automatically act with a cool head to a situation. As for having a gun in your house, fine by me, I just want to know before I would allow my child to play there. I've seen it too many times, kids find a loaded gun and that's all it takes. Not for me and it's my right to know.

Sorry to necro, but I couldnt figure out how to start a new thread. I have been trying not to completely lose my shit on facebook with an assortment of pro gun people. Not one of them has ever had an experience in reality of losing someone/having an actual experience with gun violence. I had friends at Sandy Hook whose child was in the kindergarten classroom massacred. This child managed to escape when the shooter's gun jammed. They and a handful of friends leaped over their murdered teacher and friends and ran though a lake of blood and out through the window that the shooter blew out to gain access to the school. The kids ran to the neighbor's house and banged on the door begging for help. The neighbor was the one to call 911. This child 'survived' but to this day if a door closes sharply, they fall to the ground and try to find a place to hide. WTF is wrong with these people who LOVE the NRA and believe that their 'right' to have an automatic rifle ameliorates my right to have my child come home from school NOT in a body bag???

OK, I feel better now that I vented. I had to turn Facebook off before I threw the computer through a window.

Well apparently I missed this thread years ago but I want to say this, I live in an extreme rural area and I don't own one fucking gun. I hate them but if you want to own one, good for you but understand this: NO ONE IS TRYING TO TAKE YOUR FUCKING GUNS. WE WANT STRICTER LAWS AND FOR ASSAULT WEAPONS TO BE BANNED. I get so sick of people acting like they are going to have to give up a pistol or a rifle, FFS. I also hate concealed weapons and think that should go away as well. I don't like the fact that laws have been passed in Alabama that every Tom, Dick and Billy Bob can carry a weapon into a public place whether they intend to use it or not.

I always find it hilarious to read people saying what they would do in an extreme situation. Until it happens to you, you don't have a clue.
I am going to come and burn the fucking house down... but you will blow me first."

Oh I'm all over that one. According to my facebook feed Obama was coming for everyone's guns. Thus they all went out and spent shitloads more money to increase their stockpile. You would think guns were gold. Every damned time a shooting happened people where I live would go buy more guns because "You know they're gonna try and get rid of them!" More than once I've said "You mean Obama didn't knock on your door and take your guns away?" <eyeroll>

If I had absolutely no morals and only cared about being a rich motherfucker I would have given up my current career and opened a gun store where I live. The people selling guns are making bank because people are stupid. No one is taking your god-damned guns, idiots!

And no one needs a goddamned AR-15. Some people are just too stubborn to admit this.

I wish the government would offer to buy them at an insane price. Something like $5000 bucks per gun. Or at least $500, then more like $1000+ for something like an AR-15.

And have an easy anonymous system with no questions asked. This is honestly what it would take to get rid of all (or a good chunk) of guns in the US. Broke and hungry people would be stealing their friends' and acquaintances' guns to turn in for cash. If nothing else, it would make the motherfuckers determined to have them keep them under lock and key and alarm system.

As an outsider, it is so hard to wrap my head around the gun obsession/culture. I grew up with guns in the home. We were taught very young though how dangerous and powerful they are. They were stored properly. They were also hunting guns though that went unused for over 20 years. I also received my gun license as a 20 year old. I'm not anti-gun, I'm anti-assholes thinking unneeded guns are more important than solving mass murders.

I think it was in Philadelphia many years back, the police department or government was giving cash or some type of reward for people turning in their guns. The event is very foggy in my brain, but I guess it was to end or reduce gun violence on the streets.
I wonder if they asked questions on where they got their guns. Some people who had them illegally probably didnít respond if they were required to fill out paperwork. And just think of some unsolved crimes that would be linked to those guns. Even the ones with scratched off serial numbers.
