IGG is what they used to use in the old myeloma staging system. in the new one, they use serum beta 2 microglobulin.

there are now a lot more treatments available, they seem to be working and median survival times have increased.

czb. that's true, but they also check both as part of your myeloma parameters.

I know there are other readings I should be monitoring too, I am just not too sure which ones.

I wish him well. I always admired his dignified demeanor.

i think it depends on your doctor's training. durie-salmon staging uses calcium, IGG and other factors for staging. this method is older and most oncs now use the international staging system. it uses primarily the beta 2 microglobulin and albumin. much simpler as it uses fewer labs and some of the criteria used in the durie-salmon (like skeletal xrays) are very subjective. older studies used durie-salmon or DS + ISS. new studies use ISS alone.

A friend of our has this cancer. He's had it for 8 years, gone in and out of remission, had 2 stem cell transplants. It came back a year send a half-two years ago. The docs said there is nothing else they can do. So it's a waiting game at this point. He has good days and bad days.

My dad's mom has been fighting this for 3 years. Her prognosis was 5 years from diagnosis -- especially because she won't take blood transfusions. I can see she's headed downhill and it's heartbreaking. Fuck cancer.

I know someone who died from this as well. It was not a long battle but a very tough one. I hope they have found some new treatments. I really fucking hate cancer.
I am going to come and burn the fucking house down... but you will blow me first."
