I'm a huge country music fan, have been for most of my life...way back when the Oak Ridge Boys first introduced me to Elvira! However, Toby Keith is now and has been for some time a complete idiot. For me that was really solidified when he entered into a country music fued with the Dixie Chicks. He took a stand against anyone who disagreed with Bush and marginalized a huge number of people when he explicitly stated that you are either with him and Bush or you are against freedom and the country. He is a complete ass...this just one more nail in his coffin for me.

Ludacris called Hillary a Bitch, said McCain should be in a chair, and that Bush was Mentally disabled..How does wanting to LYNCH anyone compare?!?

And Ludacris' song and him were condemned!!

Well eff me! Color me WAY ignorant. I grew up where country music was really popular and I've not only heard this song before, I've sang along too! (To the chorus, I didn't know the whole song.) I never bothered to listen to the actual verses so I had no idea it had racist overtones of lynching. I'm embarrassed now. Damn I need to pay attention.

I wonder how much of that is because I'm admittedly thick and how much of that is because the song is purposely vague.

Speaking for myself, I said that Ludicrous was wrong to call Hillary a bitch. His comment was just as stupid as Toby's comment about Obama.

Music is riddled with such contemptible crap, its sickening. But, again, it is their right. Just as it is my right- and yours- to not listen to it. Not buying shit like Keith's, Ludicrous, etc. is the best kind of 'censorship' because it hits them where it hurts- the pocketbook.

And kudos to you for your fairness.

To call Toby Keith a redneck insults rednecks. Toby should just STFU.

And we'll raise up our glasses against evil forces singing
whiskey for my men, beer for my horses

Oh well let's not leave Willie Nelson out of this... I'm sorry Toby Keith may be a jack ass but this is reaching.
I don't like Toby or any new country music at all, but I agree with you, JKM.

The video shows all different types of people. Just because a black dude is in it for 3 seconds the song is totally racist? No way. He's CLEARLY talking about the old wild west. He may be stupid but that song is not racist.

    Amen,
To those who are agreeing with this nonsense of an article - quit grasping at straws. White people were hung as well as it was the number one form of execution. No where in the song does it say anything about "lynching" (that was the misguided author's word), nor does it say anything about color.

"whiskey for my men, beer for my horses" oh no, must be racial overtones there too! Save the children.

He carries himself like a caucasian?

WTF does that even mean? Let's take Obama and compare him to a caucasian such ass...oh Toby Douchebag.

Obama is educated, well-spoken, successful, and eloquent.

Douchebag is tacky, uneducated, and an insulting instigator of discord.

His ignorance is quite apparent in
"I think the black people would say he [Obama] don't talk, act or carry himself as a black person."
Someone please teach this backwoods moron proper subject verb agreement. He should not insinuate blacks, or other minorities, who know "He don't" is incorrect, are less articulate than caucasians who butcher the language. Maybe "does not" exceeds his brain's maximum character count.

Should I assume when someone is said to "act" caucasian they are ignorant, rebellious, and quasi-anarchist, if I use Keith as the basis for my assumptions on the typical caucasian male?

Luckily, I am not as ignorant as Keith.

Country music is filled with racists. Why does this shock anyone?

On the other hand, listening the references in the song could be taken as pointing to the times of the Wild West, pre automobile. Saloons? Definitely 1800s, as speakeasies and bars would have been around in the early 1900s. Hanging was the punishment of the west, even for some, now considered, minor infractions.

I, however, do believe he used the Wild West as a smokescreen to tinge his song with his racist BS. Gangsters? I never heard the wild bunch referred to in that term, which gained popularity in the early part of the twentieth century with the mob.

Okay so to recap: Toby Keith may be an ass and perhaps even racist, but the song itself isn't inherently racist. Right?

Re-reading it now, it does sound more like wild-west imagery and references. I see how it could also be interpreted as racist, but it doesn't feel that way to me. *shrug*

I didn't even pay attention to the song. There's nothing outwardly racist about it. Toby's Obama comments are another matter.

Strange Fruit, sung by Billie Holiday

    Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
