oh i know and overall i liked the movie but there is also a very weird kind of rapey and slut-shamey subtext going on with the whole thing. it's one of those movies you enjoy but that also make you feel kind of grossed out and uncomfortable and you can't quite put your finger on what it is.

This. I like the movie too, and I seem to remember there was some kind of tit for tat because she teaches SLJ's character to be more accepting or something? Can't remember. It's a fine line between shut shaming and trying to make someone see that they're worth more than sex and BSM does go way over the line at times. My take is that the writer/director was purposely trying to push the envelope and get that icky, ambivalent reaction from the audience.

As usual, I'm wildly off topic, but the sentiment behind figuratively chaining up my sister when she tries to skip town after I put up my own life for collateral makes sense in context. So that's back on topic, I guess. lol

Well she was a hard core nympho (with a history of sexual abuse) and it was on the verge of killing her. SLJ found her passed out on a road after someone she hooked up with had fucked her, beat her ass and dumped her out on the road.

Off topic, but I miss the days where movies had you request a call from one of the characters to someone to watch their movie and they'd leave an awesome voicemail. I recall having a SLJ call to my sister for Snakes on a Plane and also sending her a message for the first Transformers movie.

More developments from this incredibly derpy, nonsensical sex cult:

Harem from hell: Nxivm leader admits to locking 'sex slave' in a room for TWO YEARS as she pleads guilty just days after her mom, suggesting she may have struck a deal with prosecutors

    • Lauren Salzman entered a guilty plea to charges of racketeering and racketeering conspiracy in secret hearing last Monday
    • That came on the heels of her mother Nancy, 67, entering a guilty plea to racketeering just two weeks prior to her daughter's hearing
    • Salzman, 42, said that she locked a woman in a room for two years, threatening to deport the woman back to Mexico if she did not complete labor tasks
    • She also admitted to being a member of the sex slave cult DOS, and confirmed that women were branded with the initials of Keith Raniere and Allison Mack
    • A transcript of the hearing during which she entered her plea was heavily redacted, which suggests she could be a cooperating witness and have a deal
    • Her mother did not take a deal however, so the two women could also be taking the fall for the cult in hopes of saving leader Keith Raniere

A sobbing Allison Mack pleads guilty in sex cult case

Former “Smallville” star Allison Mack on Monday pleaded guilty for her role in sex-slave cult Nxivm.

A sobbing Mack, 36, appeared before a judge in Brooklyn federal court where she copped to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy charges — including extortion and forced labor — just hours before jury selection was set to begin in her case.

“I must take full responsibility for my conduct. I am very sorry for my role in this case. I am very sorry to my family and to the good people I hurt through my misguided adherence to [Nxivm leader] Keith Raniere’s teachings,” Mack told the court.

Mack confessed to being part of secret master-slave group within Nxivm called DOS, admitting that she kept a slave and instructed women in the group “to perform services for me.”

She said the system was “designed to make them think they could suffer serious harm” if they didn’t perform the services — because they’d handed over damaging collateral to DOS such as nude photos and financial details.

Prosecutors allege that women in DOS were kept on starvation diets, branded with Raniere’s initials and groomed to have sex with him.

Mack is now facing 20 years in prison under the charges she pleaded guilty to Monday. It was not clear if she has a cooperation deal with the government, and her lawyers declined to comment.

Mack was among six people arrested last year over their roles in Nxivm, including its leader Keith Raniere and Seagram’s liquor heiress Claire Bronfman, who helped fund the organization with her vast fortune.

Nxivm co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter Lauren Salzman both pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy charges for their involvement in the group last month.

Lauren was also a “master” in DOS — and has admitted to keeping her own personal slave locked in a room for two years — while Nancy confessed to hacking into emails of the group’s perceived enemies and destroying evidence that could be used against it.

Nxivm Founder Keith Raniere Guilty of Sex Trafficking in Case Involving Smallville's Allison Mack

Raniere's conviction follows the April guilty plea by his top lieutenant in the group, former Smallville actress Allison Mack

Nxivm founder Keith Raniere, the leader of the controversial New York-based self-help group, was found guilty Wednesday of federal sex trafficking and forced labor charges, according to John Marzulli, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office.

Raniere’s conviction follows the April guilty plea by his top lieutenant in the group, former Smallville actress Allison Mack, to racketeering conspiracy and racketeering charges. Mack will be sentenced in September.

Prosecutors described Nxivm as a sexual pyramid scheme involving sex slaves, with Raniere at the top. The group has long marketed itself as a group that empowers people and helps them manage emotional trauma, but prosecutors said it has a darker side built on coercion and manipulation.

Investigators said Raniere, who was known as “Vanguard” to his followers, occupied the top of a pyramid called DOS, with tiers of female “slaves,” each of whom could become a “master” to slaves beneath them.

One former devotee described Nxivm as a “cult,” and the group has been the subject of scrutiny from both law enforcement and journalists after it came under fire from Dynasty actress Catherine Oxenberg, whose estranged daughter, India, joined in 2011.

The criminal complaint against Raniere, obtained by PEOPLE, outlines how how authorities believe the women in DOS were forced to turn over “collateral” — identified as potentially-damaging personal information or materials, such as nude photographs, with which they later could be blackmailed.

The women victimized by Mack and Raniere believed their “collateral” would be released if they did not engage in sexual activity with the Nxivm leader, prosecutors have said.

Authorities said Mack forced DOS slaves, including a woman identified as Jane Doe 1, to have sex with Raniere and that Mack “groomed DOS slaves for sex with Raniere by requiring [them] to adhere to extremely restrictive diets and not remove their pubic hair (in accordance with Raniere’s sexual preferences) and by requiring them to remain celibate and not to masturbate.”

According to arguments prosecutors made in court documents, Mack allegedly demanded that the group’s slaves partake in “readiness” drills requiring them to respond to their masters at any time of night. Mack’s slaves were also allegedly “kept seriously sleep-deprived and emaciated to the point where they stopped menstruating.”

Mack “received financial benefits [in] the form of continued status and participation in DOS, as well as financial opportunities from Raniere,” according to court documents filed by prosecutors.

Raniere was arrested in March 2018 in Mexico.

Prior to his trial, Raniere had sought to have the charges against him dismissed. In a motion, his attorneys described Nxivm as a “wonderful humanitarian organization” that is “dedicated to achieving peace on a global scale.”

The filing adds: “If there was a polar-opposite of an organized crime family, Nxivm would be it.”

The motion further claims that “Nxivm members have sought to end the violence in Mexico, have introduced tools useful to people with difficult conditions, such as Tourette’s syndrome, have pioneered multi-linguistic schools for young children, who would become proficient in multiple languages and later multi-cultural adults, and have developed approaches to help people lead happier, more productive, more enriched lives.”

Raniere’s attorneys could not immediately be reached for comment and it was unclear if they plan to appeal the verdict.

That CW Source video...just wow. No one would have suspected a thing. It really sounded like they wanted to help college kids. I still don't get how, once you find out the truth, how do you stay in a sex slave cult?

Clare Bronfman Sentenced for Role in NXIVM Scandal

Jess Cohen and Elyse Dupre, EONLINE / 8:32 pm ET Wed Sep 30, 2020

Clare Bronfman has been sentenced for her involvement in the NXIVM scandal.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the 41-year-old daughter of the late business mogul Edgar Bronfman Sr., was ordered to spend six years and nine months in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office confirms to E! News.
Per the sentencing press release shared with E! News, District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis announced in a Brooklyn federal court that Bronfman would serve "81 months imprisonment for conspiracy to conceal and harbor aliens for financial gain and fraudulent use of personal identification information."
According to the government's sentencing memorandum filed earlier this month, Bronfman had requested a non-custodial sentence of three years' probation. However, the court papers stated this request "ignores the seriousness of her crimes and the significant need for deterrence in the unique circumstances of this case." As the documents put it, "The Court should reject Bronfman's request for special treatment and instead impose a sentence that will demand respect for the law."
NBC News reported that Bronfman had also submitted a letter to the court last month in which she noted that she "never meant to hurt anyone" and that she was "deeply sorry." However, she reportedly wrote that "NXIVM and Keith greatly changed my life for the better."
People to Know From the NXIVM Scandal
In April 2019, Bronfman pleaded guilty to conspiracy to conceal and harbor someone who was living in the U.S. illegally for commercial advantage and private financial gain, as well as to fraudulent use of identification. When Bronfman entered her plea, she expressed her remorse. "I am truly remorseful," Bronfman told U.S. District Court Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis. "I endeavored to do good in the world and help people—however, I have made mistakes." She was also called to forfeit $6 million as part of her plea agreement.
The heiress to the Seagrams liquor fortune had been accused of financing Keith Raniere's illegal conduct. In July 2019, Raniere was found guilty of multiple counts, including racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, forced labor conspiracy, sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and attempted sex trafficking. According to the sentencing memorandum, "Bronfman spent millions of dollars of her inherited fortune on Raniere's endeavors." As the court documents stated, "There can be little doubt that Raniere would not have been able to commit the crimes with which he was convicted were it not for powerful allies like Bronfman."

Raniere and Bronfman aren't the only ones who have made headlines over the case. Allison Mack has, as well. In April 2019, the Smallville actress pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and racketeering acts of state law extortion and forced labor in the NXIVM case. Both she and Raniere have yet to be sentenced.

Yes, we started watching it on vacation at the beach a couple weeks ago. First of all, there was only one HBO channel, so we were kind of a captive audience. They had Catherine Oxenberg sitting at a table with some of these people, and talking about her daughter, and then one of the women got up to show her where she was branded. Lots of old clips talking about this. I think I missed a couple early episodes? So, many people seemed to have gotten into this for legitimate, innocent reasons. I can't figure out when it turned sideways...
