Cosmo is totally an Italian name. I went to school with a guy with this name.

But mostly it's usually the name of somebody's (person that I went to school, church, etc with) relative.

    Italian here.
Cosmo sounds very old fashioned here and I'd say it is a very rare name. Even the less rare, less old fashioned version "Cosimo" is still quite old and not super popular.
Feels like it might be one of those traditional names that are still being used by 2nd or 3rd generation Italians in the US, but that you don't hear a lot anymore in Italy.

I think it’s part of a larger trend of bringing back old fashioned names that had fallen out of use. My friends named their baby Hazel and you’re seeing a lot more names like vera and Rosalie and oscar and august.
I don’t mind it as long as it’s a mix and not the same 5 names ad nauseam which then trickle down from the hipsters to the rest and you start seeing Roesalyyy and haezyl. It’s also way better than the “tragedeighs” like Madysyn, Jaxxon, Jayden etc which should really be banned at this point.

If you were from a certain TV generation, the only "Hazel" out there in popular culture was a super-annoying maid.
