Ryan O'Neal Prostate Cancer: Actor Reveals Stage 2 Diagnosis
04/17/12 07:43 AM ET
LOS ANGELES -- Ryan O'Neal says the prognosis is positive for his recovery from recently diagnosed Stage 2 prostate cancer.
The 70-year-old actor said in a statement released through his publicist on Monday that he was "shocked and stunned by the news" but feels fortunate the disease was caught early. He says he's expected to make a full recovery.
A memoir about his romance with actress Farrah Fawcett, "Both of Us: My Life With Farrah," will be published on May 1. Fawcett died in 2009 after a public battle with cancer.
O'Neal says he's grateful for the support of his friends and family and advocates regular exams since early detection is the best defense.
Higher stage numbers mean more extensive disease, with Stage 4 being the highest, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Ryan O'Neal's recent diagnosis is not a death sentence.
The actor, 70, tells ABC's Nightline that his stage 2 prostate cancer is "under control." The health scare came as a surprise to O'Neal, who says he "wasn't prepared for it. I wasn't ready for it. But you never are."
When he first heard the news, O'Neal remembered thinking, "'Why me?' I just sort of chalked it up to bad luck."
O'Neal also revealed he has skin cancer -- a melanoma -- on his nose. "Welcome to Malibu and the sun," he told Nightline.
His longtime love Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with anal cancer in 2009 at age 62, but her memory has inspired O'Neal to think positively about his future."Farrah taught me that -- about fighting it. Fight a good fight."
On Saturday, O'Neal released a statement to Us Weekly explaining his current condition. "Although I was shocked and stunned by the news, I feel fortunate that it was detected early and according to my extraordinary team of doctors the prognosis is positive for a full recovery."
"I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time, and I urge everyone to get regular check-ups, as early detection is the best defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many.
O'Neal has four children: Tatum, 48, and Griffin, 47, (with ex-wife Joanna Cook Moore), Patrick, 43, (with ex-wife Leigh Taylor-Young) and Redmond, 27 (with Fawcett).

Very true. My sister had melanoma multiple times. She was told once she gets to stage 2 or beyond you can basically kiss your ass goodbye. The only effective treatment is cutting it out, nothing else works well enough to save you.
And the sad thing about melanoma is it's going to come back so you need to be extra vigilant. She's been cancer free for 7 years and is very careful but she lives on pins and needles just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Will he blame Tatum for his cancer the way he did with Farrah's? Worst. Father. Ever.

He is promoting his new memoir, Both Of Us, My Life With Farrah, which has already been shrouded in controversy.
According toRadar Online, two of Ryan’s children are furious at some of the allegations.
Son Redmond, with Farrah, and daughter Tatum, from his previous marriage to Leigh Taylor-Young, are furious at some of the things their famous father has written about them.
A source tells the website the pair feel the book simply promotes what they call ‘Ryan's self-serving narcissistic tendencies.’

Redmond, Ryan’s only child with the late Farrah Fawcett, is reportedly outraged that the book sees Ryan attempt to blame him for his drug arrest in 2008.
Redmond, 27, has had his own drug problems and is currently enrolled in court-ordered rehab after being arrested for heroin possession last year.
Meanwhile 48-year-old Tatum, who recently reconciled with her father after they were estranged for several years, ‘thinks Ryan is attempting to re-write history and endear himself to the public,’ according to the source.
Both Of Us, My Life With Farrah, goes on sale May 1.

Ryan O'Neal doesn't know where son Griffin is imprisoned
world entertainment news – 3 hours ago
Cancer-stricken Ryan O'Neal has lost contact with his troubled son Griffin because the actor has no idea where he has been imprisoned.
The Love Story star's eldest son was sentenced to 16 months behind bars in February following a car crash last August, when he was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.
But O'Neal, who last month announced he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, reveals he's still yet to visit Griffin, 47 - the actor's son with late actress Joanna Moore.
During an appearance on U.S. talk show The View on Tuesday, he confessed, "I don't even know what prison he's in. They don't tell me."
He did not elaborate on who was banning him from finding out where his son is being held.
But O'Neal admits he has patched up his differences with his daughter Tatum - Griffin's older sister - and she has been taking care of her sick father after overcoming her own issues at a drug rehabilitation centre earlier this year.
He added, "Tatum is out and about and doing much better, looks wonderful and is happy. She's always happiest when I'm ill because she can mother me and fawn over me and take care of me."
O'Neal has another son, Redmond, with the late Farrah Fawcett. He is also tackling substance abuse issues in a court-ordered drug treatment programme.

His kids have had an awful lot of problems over the years. Drugs, prison etc. Does Ryan O'Neal take any responsibility for any of it?! He pisses me off.
Again, no mention of his fourth child, son Patrick with Leigh Taylor-Young. Although it's probably a good thing NOT to be acknowledged in this situation.
I had no idea Griffin was in prison, guess I totally missed that story. He and Tatum were so totally fucked in the parental lottery. The only reason they ended up being raised by Ryan was because their mother lost custody due to drug and alcohol problems. Pretty tragic life, really. Tatum looks a lot like her I think.

Ryan, Ryan, Ryan. Mamma mia he's such a button pusher. This has got to be one of the many reason's that Tatum will never heal and feel peaceful. One comment like that equals 10 therapy sessions for her.
