No one in my family has lived longer than me! I'm 62 this year. My mother died at 57 due to throat cancer and alcoholism. My father at 61 from a heart attack due to diabetic complications. My brother was also 61 due to the same thing as my dad also he was an alcoholic for 20 years and a heavy smoker for over 40 years. My sister died at 60 due to Lou Gherig's. She was also overweight and had diabetes. She was basically a time bomb. My other sister is 60 and has had a stroke from smoking, has out of control diabetes and is in a wheel chair. So I decided to have Gastric bypass surgery and get rid (or put into remission) my diabetes. I have been overweight since I was 10. I smoked until I was 40 and then quit. My doctor says I am really healthy now after a weight loss of 87 pounds. I plan to break the family curse in one more year.

I was wanting to say this, but I feel sorry for the people with family history. It's almost like they're doomed. If you have genetic predisposition for any health issues, you should get a full health check every year or 6 months!
Hopefully technology will get better soon where family history doesn't matter.

Congratulations on the weight loss Nana. 87 pounds is no mean feat!

I'm also going to second coolade (and everyone else's) suggestion to make yourself aware of any family history and keep your checks up to date. It doesn't have to be immediate family who are affected either; my partner was days from death when he finally collapsed and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after months of ignoring the symptoms/attributing the weight loss to stress and other things. He hadn't considered diabetes as a possibility before then as the family history was amongst some aunts and cousins and his parents and brother were all fine.

Even if there is not family history of anything, it's always a good idea to get regular check-ups. My doc says family history always starts with one person, and that person could be you!
