The Avengers are British (& were establishment).
its not just the things that you pointed out but the other subtler stuff IMO. Simplistically eg the colours & style of superman's costume.
Bourne was the lone hero (seen everywhere since Valentino, the lone cowboy, Jack Ryan, etc etc) fighting injustice so everyone can enjoy the American way blahblahblah.
I think that the subtleties are more obvious to insiders looking in who are in on "the joke", so to speak. Americans not living in the US or who have "gone native" overseas before returning home, etc

Reading Mo's chart, it occurred to me that Iron Man is really just kinda like Jonathan Hart with superpowers.

Stefanie Powers leaves Goopy in the dirt, though.

Stalin was a communist, but communism and socialism are not mutually exclusive political theories. Both believe in collective ownership of the means of production. Hitler was also a socialist, technically. But he was also a fascist. We could drive ourselves into the ground arguing what each of them are exactly politically, but they are largely thought to be on opposite ends of the political spectrum (although Hitler apparently hated Stalin a lot more than Stalin hated Hitler).

The Bourne films represent the American government as corrupt, and with Bourne as an antihero. The overall thrust of the film is not that the American government is great. The American Government is depicted as using unwitting Americans as human guinea pigs in medical experiments and then assassinating them and the scientists who worked with them for convenience. And the denouement in the last film (Bourne Legacy) is not that Bourne helped everyone enjoy the American way. He merely escaped to anonymity while the government cabal completely got away with their experiment and murder. Hardly an edifying rah, rah pro-American resolution.

Also, the Avengers film cited was Marvel Avengers - which is like a team of multiple superheroes. The problem was that the logo was so small.

Superman fights for "truth, justice, and the American way." That's kind of right wing/jingoistic. But he also works as a journalist for the "mainstream media" - a profession reviled by the right wing. And has a principal nemesis who is a power-mad American capitalist. And his costume is not red-white-blue, but red-yellow-blue - the flag of Colombia. Which, I admit, is kind of a right-wing country right now.

I don't know shit from shinola about super heros although I used to watch the Spider-Man cartoon as a child. Thanks for the chart and explanation of the various characters' right or left wing leanings Mo.

In a way, he's kind of a superhero. Because how else does a guy built like Keifer Sutherland get all that stuff done in 24 hours?

I checked out of the show for good when he disemboweled a guy, ALIVE, in order to get his hands on a thumb drive. Even Batman wouldn't do that!

Damn, now I regret not watching the show. I was going to when it first came out but I do believe that it was on Mondays and Miami had a Monday night football game on, so no 24 for me.

admittedly, i have not seen a lot of these. i agree with mo on the placement of bourne (and i love your description above), but why is iron man on the right wing side? because he lives in malibu? and i still don't get why hitler appears on the chart. if you have him on the right, you might as well put joan of arc on the left.

Because he is a wealthy industrialist superhero - thereby glorifying the 1 percenters. He inherited his business from his dad. He also kind of acts like a drunken, privileged frat bro. he is closely allied with the military. His original enemies were Afhgani's. Then, in Iron Man 2, his enemy is a Russian dude whose dad was a political prisoner. In Iron Man 3, his arch enemy is a handicapped scientist guy who tried to offer him a job long ago. I'm simplifying, of course.

agree, that he is wealthy. but 1) he is a philanthropist and 2) in the original iron man, wasn't he appalled when he realized his weapons were being used to attack the village?

Yeah, I'm being kind of disingenuous picking out certain things. He is not Rush Limbaugh with a magic combat suit. But he is still probably the aspirational superhero for right wingers -- you get to be a bachelor capitalist billionaire, fight bad guys, and aren't so muscular that you don't fit in your Brioni suits.
