15 year olds are not children. It wasn't that long ago that they were being married off at 11, and now they're supposed to be completely void of any and all sexual feelings because they're 'innocent'. No matter how hard anyone tries, without resorting to chemical castration, they are not going to repress natural sexual urges that people develop post-puberty.

i tend to agree. one art history history class and the first thing you notice is that 90% of art consists of nudes of nubile young girls, from cave paintings to degas' bronze danseuses, modelled off the 'petits rats' (young ballet students) of the paris opera. but if these same artists were working today, they'd probably get shut down and arrested and accused of being paedophiles.
not that annie leibowitz is up there with degas or anything but just saying, for argument's sake, that men will always find young women attractive, and young men too - just look at all the greek marble statues of pubescent boys.
and no, i'm not saying they should act on those attractions. but that's the whole point - forbidden fruit is always the most tempting, and all that.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who recently herself got into some controversy for posing “topless” for AARP magazine, weighs in on Miley Cyrus’s semi-topless scandal with Vanity Fair. Here’s an excerpt from her opinion piece:
When these young people get all dressed up for award show red-carpet events don’t we all comment how beautiful, stunning and grown-up they look in their strapless/backless dresses and heels and tousled hair? None of this is new. None of this should be news. But it is news because it is a business. It is all Business. It is called Show Business. Show Abyss-ness! I call it Show-OFF Business. You throw a child onto the jaws of a business and they will get eaten.
I know how Miley feels. I too was a little embarrassed by my recent topless “scandal” and the subsequent parodies, but I am an adult woman. I protected myself during the shoot and I can take the heat. I only wish that her guardians had protected her.

I don't think there would be such a ruckus about these photos if she hadn't had the MySpace photos. It's yet another example of her taking another step toward Britney/Lindsay territory. She's only 15 and needs better parental guidance.
And the apology is bullshit. She knows it, we know it. But, it is getting her tons of attention, which, in the end makes everyone more money.
I don't see anything wrong with the pics of Miley and her dad.

Exactly. The issue is that it's sexualizing a 15-y.o. girl--and while we all know it's natural for all girls that age to start exploring those thoughts and feelings, it is NOT acceptable for her to do it publicly on a magazine cover nor on her myspace page. If her parents are okay with letting her do it for publicity purposes, they are dropping the ball where parenting is concerned, imo.

That's just crap. How many of those same people saying that would allow their 15 y.o. daughter to pose this way on a magazine cover for the world to see? Of course it doesn't guarantee that she'll go down the Britney/Lindsay path, but why even take that chance? I do agree that it's a publicity ploy in bad taste and poor judgment.

Miley, to me, is one of those girls who just looks like trash, no matter how hard she's trying to convince everyone that she's high class. If she thinks she looks beautiful and classy in this picture, she's sorely mistaken.
I find it hard to believe she didn't know exactly what she was doing with this pic. Please. This is the same girl who takes pics of herself posing in her undies and pouting on Hello Kitty sheets so that she can "leak" them online and lap up the attention. I don't believe for one second that she thinks it's all just totally innocent. Frankly, it disgusts me that she's accusing Annie of taking advantage of her naivete or whatever the hell she wants us to believe. I have a feeling that shot was 100% Miley's idea, and not because she wanted to be "artistic" but because, just like her mother, she's trash who lives for attention and believes that being sexually forward is the easiest and best way to get it.
She's not as pretty as she thinks she is, and if these types of photos are the things she wants to put out there as a reflection or herself, she needs to stop marketing herself as the next big role model for elementary girls or Disney needs to stop it by giving her an ultimatum- get your shit together or you're fired- instead of making excuses for her and giving her second chances every time she fucks up.

Damn does all this 'sexualizing a 15 year old is bad' stuff mean I have to end my dream of adopting a certain 15 year old muscular strapping Brazilian named Javier? shit.

Disney will never fire her or even give her a slap on the wrist for this until it starts hurting their bottom line. They'll only listen if parents and advertisers make a big stink and stop contributing to the Hannah-Montana fortune.

Yes, it does, because he's STRAIGHT, damn it! And being 'adopted' by ME!
Seriously though, there's a good reason you don't hear as much about 15 year old boys being sexualized. Because most of them? UGH. Not their best age.
The other day on the street I got hit on by a fifteen year old (with suave lines like "Hey, what's your name, you're hot."). I manage to stifle my giggles and give him a stern "Move along, sonny."
Seriously, what would he had done if I'd said yes, come on, let's go back to mine so I can despoil you? Probably peed his pants...or expelled some other body fluid in them. Either way, I doubt sex would have been an option.

This chick is LOVING the publicity she is getting from this shoot and the pics she posted on her myspace. Look for her to continue to act out.
IMO, she should just stick with the Disney image. She's not a cute girl, and she's not talented in the least bit. I can't see her having a career outside of Disney. She shouldn't push it too far with her image.

Funnily enough, I don't remember that much contraversy (I miss the 90s!). Btw, teenage me LOVED that video. Yet I somehow managed to avoid emulating said behaviour, because I knew the differance between fantasy and reality, and because I knew my mother would KILL me. Maybe today's outraged parents should spend a little less worrying about celeb kids, and a little more time raising their own.

I think people tend to see it coming in an Aerosmith video. They do have a song titled, "Love in an Elevator."

Yep.
I don't find the photos offensive. What I do find offensive is all the resulting hoopla. I find that most people I know are just foaming at the mouth, waiting for her to mess up. Its like they almost HOPE that she's going to fuck up in a big way and they can read all about it. Disney Princess, they can't wait for her to go down in flames - they're almost provoking it in a way, hoping by prodding her with a stick she'll do something insane or slutty. Then it will be big news. THATS what I find offensive. People act like she should be an icon of virtue and never mess up - she's a kid! I don't understand how people revel in her mistakes, and can't wait for her to slip up again. People are almost giddy. Its not like they are hoping she learns from her mistakes, its the opposite - they're just waiting for her to fuck up more. And the comparisons to Britney are old - give me a break - maybe in the future, but now? Miley is not even CLOSE to batshit Brit and her antics. They are making a big deal out of this because the public needs to sink its teeth into something juicy - whats better than a tween queen becoming "pornish"? Maybe we can hope for even more! The whole thing is just disgusting (and I'm not even talking about the pictures).
