The way i see it, MJ never thought he was doing any wrong and when the allegations first surfaced, he wanted to fight them. The lawyers took a look at the evidence and said "look, you don't want a trial, pay these people off".
The lawyers for the alleger took a look at the monetary offer and did whatever tap dance they needed to convince the family to take the money and run (which wasn't difficult if the boy's father was as mercenary as it appears).

You know how falsely accused act? Google The Little Rascals Daycare scandal in NC. Several people went to prison because they wouldn't take a plea. One woman was separated from her toddlers for 2 years, in prison, because she wouldn't testify that abuse was happening at the daycare.
Google Dale Akiki, a disabled man who was practically indigent but who fought abuse charges tooth and nail. You think it hurt Jacko more than this guy to be accused of abusing children? Dale had NOTHING. Miraculously, he got great public defenders who never gave up and got him aquitted.
Yet Jacko is special. He doesn't have to live by our rules. The children wanted to sleep with him! The parents were all greedy! Jacko is too sensitive for a trial!
Do you see what you are willing to believe to defend a freak?

If Debbie is the bio mother then she probably will have a stronger claim to her kids than their non-bio grandmother. The DNA will tell the tale. However, Debbie was specifically excluded from MJ's will (I saw a copy of it posted by reputable The Age newspaper) and Katherine is specifically named as the kids' guardian.
If I recall the will also says that MJ does not own any property in California even though he's a resident there so this idea of turning Neverland into a permanent touristard attraction could pose a problem.
