Yeah, I always thought that was a dirty thing to do, especially since McCartney was the one who advised MJ to invest in publishing rights. (McCartney owns lots of them, including the Buddy Holly catalog I believe.)

Not even sure how much of those rights Jackson even owned anymore...I thought he sold a portion of them to Sony to pay off some debt.

In any case, whatever he owned is part of his estate now, and I'm guessing his assets will be sold off to pay all the debtors who make claims against the estate. So I wouldn't be surprised if Paul gets the chance to buy them back.

Oh no If he looked like dead man walking, I could accept that it was his time to croak (abit like Heath Ledger who looked like shit in his last days) but he looked healthy - so sad.

Here's what I was able to find... only wiki so who knows...

Song catalogue

Main article: Northern Songs
In 1963 Lennon and McCartney agreed to assign their song publishing rights to Northern Songs, a company created by music publisher Dick James.[110] The company was administered by James' own company Dick James Music. Northern Songs went public in 1965, with Lennon and McCartney each holding 15% of the company's shares Dick James and the company's chairman, Charles Silver, held a controlling 37.5%. In 1969, following a failed attempt by Lennon and McCartney to buy the company, James and Silver sold Northern Songs to British TV company Associated TeleVision (ATV), from which Lennon and McCartney received stock.

In 1985, after a short period in which the parent company was owned by Australian business magnate Robert Holmes à Court, ATV Music was sold to Michael Jackson for a reported $47 million[111] (trumping a joint bid by McCartney and Yoko Ono), including the publishing rights to over 200 songs composed by Lennon and McCartney.

In 1995, Jackson and Sony merged its music publishing businesses.[111] Since then Jackson and Sony have jointly owned most of the Lennon-McCartney songs recorded by The Beatles. Meanwhile, Lennon's estate and McCartney still receive their respective songwriter shares of the royalties. Despite his ownership of most of the Lennon-McCartney publishing, Jackson has only recorded one Lennon-McCartney composition himself, "Come Together" which was featured in his film Moonwalker and HIStory album.

Although the Jackson-Sony catalogue includes most of The Beatles' greatest hits, four of their earliest songs had been published by one of EMI's publishing companies prior to Lennon and McCartney signing with Dick James – and McCartney later succeeded in personally acquiring the publishing rights to "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "P.S. I Love You" and "Ask Me Why" from EMI.

Harrison and Starr did not renew their songwriting contracts with Northern Songs in 1968, signing with Apple Publishing instead. Harrison later created Harrisongs, which still owns the rights to his post-1967 songs such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something". Starr also created his own company, called Startling Music. It holds the rights to his two post-1967 songs recorded by The Beatles, "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden".

I'm not surprised. How much did he owe? 400 million dollars?

About the rights to the Beatles songs, I heard on MSNBC that MJ put it in his Will back in January that when he dies the rights are given back to Sir Paul.

CelebNews@Usmagazine.com! - Jackson Family Attorney: Prescription Drugs May Have Caused Death
ShareThis

Although the exact cause of Michael Jackson's death remains unknown, Brian Oxman - who has served as the family's attorney for more than 20 years - suspects prescription drug abuse may have played a role.
"I don't know what caused Michael's death, and I don't want to speculate as to what the causes are," Oxmon tells Usmagazine.com. "I only know that I warned them there was the misuse of prescription medications by people who were enabling him; his handlers, folks who should never have been permitted to allow him to use those medications in the manner I observed."
"So is that the cause of it? I don't know," he continues. "People die from various and sundry causes - they have congenital malformations of the heart, they have difficulty with various infections. I don't know what Michael Jackson's death is a result of."

Oxmon says Jackson, 50, "had no particular health concerns except that he had broken his leg many years ago, and it hurt him."
"He had cracked a vertebrae in his back and he took painkillers to try to ease the pain," he says. "And now we find ourselves here. I don't know if the two are connected. I had warned that the misuse of medications would result in this, and I am heartbroken that we are here."
Oxmon declined to elaborate on the types of medications Jackson was taking "because it is something which is private to Michael, and we'll have to wait for the toxicology reports before we jump to any kind of conclusions. I only know that I warned that his day may come. And lo and behold, here we are."

An autopsy is planned for Friday, but results may not be final until toxicology tests can be completed, which could take several days and sometimes weeks. Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben said if a cause can be determined by the autopsy, they will announce the results.
"We will have to wait to see what the toxicology reports have to say, what the coroners report has to say," Oxmon says. "When that happens, I will be very vocal. It could very well be he died from natural causes, in which case, my gosh, the tragedy becomes even greater."

Jackson was set to headline 50 sold-out shows, billed "This Is It," at London's O2 Arena beginning in July -- his final London performances.
Oxman did not know if Jackson had been examined before the tour, but "he has been in good health," he says.
As he rehearsed for the concerts, "He had been making his very best efforts to be pain-free, but it's been very difficult to him," Oxmon says.
"But I was not aware, and I don't think any of the family members were aware, of any kind of specific condition which was causing him any kind of medical or physical difficulty," he continues. "I don't know what the extent of his exercise routine was. But I do know that he was making good progress toward getting ready to perform at the show."

CelebNews@Usmagazine.com! - Michael Jackson's Kids "Doing Fine," With Grandmother
ShareThis

After Michael Jackson's sudden passing, the singer's three children "are doing fine," says Brian Oxmon, the Jackson family attorney for 20 years.
"They are in the care of a nanny," he tells Usmagazine.com, adding that they're staying with their grandmother, Katherine. "Ms. Jackson will care for them and I'm sure there will be all kinds of discussions that will take place about the kids."
The children – Blanket, 7, Paris, 11, and Prince Michael, 12 - are "just beautiful," Oxmon says. "They're well-trained, well educated and extraordinarily talented. They get to play with their cousins and their nieces and their nephews. They are just smarter than smart can be."

(Paris and Prince Michael were born through artificial insemination when Jackson was briefly wed to Debbie Rowe. Prince Michael Jackson II's mother's identity was never released.)

Oxmon tells Us Jackson family members are still struggling to cope with the shocking loss.
"They are stunned," Oxmon tells Us. "They are barely even able to speak about it."

Oxmon was with the family at the hospital (mother Katherine, brothers Randy and Jermaine, and sister LaToya, arrived separately at the hospital for vigil).
"They were silent, they were crying, they weren't really able to say anything," he says. "They just were stunned by this whole experience."
Adds Oxmon, "I know that they are now all together."

This stuff is really bugging me, particularly because the media seems quite ready to deify this man. I couldn't care less if he was a great entertainer. He chose to do things that are completely wrong. Grrrr....
Again, we have double standards for beloved celebrities and ordinary people. If someone makes so many people around the world 'happy' with his 'talent,' they can overlook all of his many faults that they surely would not forgive for 'lesser mortals.'

Sad but true.

Crap. I need some MJ jokes. I've been challenged to a joke-off by a friend and I'm running out of material. Help me out, people, please.

Flavor Flav Told to Beat It

Posted Jun 25th 2009 10:22PM by TMZ Staff
Moments after news broke that Michael Jackson had died, Flavor Flav showed up outside the Jackson family's Encino estate -- and sent his regards to Katherine Jackson via intercom.

Flav, who considered Jackson a great friend, wasn't allowed in -- but said he'd return later.
