I think the sect of Catholicism he follows is not recognized by the Vatican. I think they do pre-Vatican II masses and such. He paid for a church to be built that is not affiliated with the local Catholic diocese.

That's true - sedavaticanism. They believe that John 23 was illegally elected, and that Cardinal Joesph Siri was the real Pope Gregory 17. Furthermore they believe that the papal conclave electing Siri was undermined when a group of Jews and Freemasons threatened to A Bomb the Vatican, unless John 23, a practiscising Freemason, was made pontiff. That's what Mel, and his father Hutton, have against the jews.
