I'm not surprised by this at all, but I do commend her for speaking out about it and am happy to hear that she's in a good spot. It has to be difficult being in the public eye and dealing with mental illness.

does anyone remember that some people suggested her ex-husband, tommy motolla kinda contributed to her breakdown? like doing things to make her paranoid and kinda just messing with her head? he wasn't too happy she left him.

Yep. I've read many times about how he tried to destroy her career after she left him. He was an ass.

And imagine what her life was like when she was married to him - I'm sure that his presence in her life did not help in any way mental health wise.

Definitely wasn't good for her. You can pick up quite a lot in her lyrics from the time.

Yes, I remember hearing some stories back then that her husband was controlling and making her work extra hard. And, then afterwards she signed a big record deal with Virgin, a lot of pressure.

I remember this E doco around the Glitter days talking about her breakdown (2.40 mark was an odd interview)

That bizarre interview she was giving while holding the pink boom box reeked of a manic episode. Very sad her people kept allowing her to push herself like that, knowing she was not in her right mind.

I didnt realise she was quick to promote Glitter after her short hospital stay. The record company would've pushed her so hard to promote the film and CD even though she wasn't well (reminds me of the Britney Spears breakdown)

The interview with her holding the pink boom box is sad, her "people" really did control her.

I remember the pink boom box interview. But back then I just thought she was being a bitch, and was probably intoxicated.

I remember reading a BI that it was Thalia who managed to convince Tommy Mottola to leave her alone. This was from CDAN from aaaaages ago, but Enty also said if he hadn't of, Mariah's career would've been relegated to just singing on cruise ships, night clubs, what have you. And that is exactly what Mariah's career looked like it was heading to because of that Glitter movie.

And the way she dresses these days, apparently it's a big fuck you to Tommy Mottola for making her cover up, like wearing just turtle necks during their marriage. I don't know how true that is because I just Googled Tommy Mottola and Mariah Carey, and she's dressed pretty provocatively, but I remember seeing one music video during her marriage to him, and she was dressed in a turtle neck.

^ Yes he made her dress conservatively at the start of her career but that's never been how she's liked to dress.

Really don't think Mariah would have had to do cruise ships/clubs, no matter how bad Glitter did lol.

^ I don't know. She had a strong voice and that fashionable warble at the time which is either all but gone now or she doesn't dare sing live. I mean, Amy Winehouse lost her voice too and so did Whitney, clearly due to lifestyle. I just find it very convenient that after all these years and endless recent bad publicity that she comes out with this story.

Ok, I've found the BI, and it wasn't from ages ago (I swear it was) and there were some details I was mistaken on.

Somehow, despite what I am about to write, the two subjects of the blind item have kissed and made up. It never looked like that would happen way back in the day though. She is A+ list. Permanently so. A singer. There was a time though where that A+ list went down to B+ and it was 50/50 whether she would ever have a career again. Back in the day when she was mentored by this man, he was hurt when she walked away from them so he made it a life mission to crush her to the point where she would never be able to work again. No one would touch her. For any project. She would be reduced to playing cruise ships because he would call every casino and make sure she could not perform in any of them or suffer his wrath. How he could do that? Other connections. Family connections. One example of the lengths he went to is when he contacted this now daytime talk show host who had one of the top radio programs in the country at the time. He offered the radio host $50K and a package of information he wanted her to read on the air and to spread around to her friends and other people in the industry. Despite the fact that the host and the A+ list singer did not and still do not get along that great, the host declined. It didn’t take long for the guy to find someone else to do it though. This battle of destruction would have continued to the point of no return for the singer, but something intervened on her behalf. Cupid. The guy met someone who he is still with and she convinced him it was not worth his time or effort. If not for that chance meeting, we would probably be asking whatever happened to the A+ lister rather than keeping her as a permanent A+ lister.
    A+ lister: Mariah Carey
    Mentor: Tommy Mottola
    His new love: Thalia
    Radio show host: Wendy Williams

I think she's said it now as she was worried her ex manager was going to spill about her. That's the feeling I got from some things people close to her said. But her brother did actually say many years ago that she was diagnosed with bipolar in 2001. I don't think anyone took him seriously at the time given how he liked to mouth off about her.

I learned recently from an acquaintance that trauma induced bipolar is a diagnosis. I wonder if that's what some of these celebs are dealing with.
