It was spelled and pronounced differently back then, and always conveyed contempt.

I wondered if becoming more indifferent to it was a bad thing, but then decided that I like it when slurs lose their power. This particular word has generations of suffering attached to it so it may not ever become completely powerless but it's not the weapon it used to be. I think that's a good thing, even though its use maybe be in poor taste in many people's opinion.
Agree, and it's a generational shift for sure. I worked (briefly, thank you lawd baby) at our violent high school, and heard teens of all colors and creeds using the term with perfect equanimity. And @NickiDrea, I'm talking black kids, Latino kids and white kids all using it with each other (along with their "rap names") before going off to burgle houses together. No negative consequences at all for anybody, except I guess the person whose stuff gets stolen. Of course we are the most diverse community in--I forget if it's CA or the whole country, but yeah. Different gang and family affiliations are apparently more important than one's color/race.

There were of course always a few kids who pronounced the phrase "my (actually 'mah') n***a" so that it sounded like "my knicker".

Madonna is still an idiot. But that's old news.

I am finding Rocco as insufferable as his mother. I just have this feeling we'll be inundated by him. Rocco, Rocco everywhere.

The proud mother of four commented: 'No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out! #disn****'

This is pretty much what is wrong with the entire world...in one "sentence."

    Special announcement!

I am black, and am not offended by what she said.

Yes, Nigger is directed towards black and middle eastern folks when some wants to be racist. I would be, if someone said that to my face in a negative, hateful way. The word in general makes me cringe, because there is much history behind it. I wouldn't want to be called any negative term, even if someone is trying to be cute. Example, my "friend" in high school thought it was cute by saying to her friends "Hey Hoe, skank!". I guess that's why she has 5 kids early...ANYWAY. By the way, she was trying to be cool.
The word nigga is if you want to be down/cool/hip. I don't like that either.

Choose a word that will not cause an uproar, that's all. Unless you are crazy, and like that kind of shit.

    But we all know this.

^ Can we at least agree a 50 year old mother of four should probably not be talking to her teenage son on instagram that way?

Respectabiltiy, dignity, class..not Madonna that's for sure. As you age you try to cling to what you knew and how it gave you relevance, but age says "fuck that shit" and takes it away from you. For someone like Madonna the realization that in 4 and half short years she will be 60 must be terrifying. How can she continue to be the way she was when it has slipped away just like it does for mortal people....you know, the ones that spent their money buying her crap music. Being hip and edgy means shit when you're 60. Just being alive and cancer free and relatively healthy is so much cooler.

They should just ban this word whatsoever, it's disrespecting and a sign of no self-respect.

I know what you mean. There is a high Pakistani population in theUK and there was a lot of bad feeling with the National Front in the 70s; and again now since the 9/11 etc attacks. Now is see lots of businesses called Pak-something when P*ki was a racial slur and still is.

This is so ridiculous. She is too damn old for this shit. It must be embarrassing for her kids. She only a few years younger than me.
Oh, I offended you with my opinion? You should hear the ones I keep to myself.
