Checked out the pics..they are NOT 'Rubenesque'..that is just obesity. Anywhere from obese..to morbidly obese IMO. The average American woman is NOT that big. Maybe pageant moms though...
*Maybe a couple of them would be 'Rubenesque'..and a couple would be 'morbidly obese'. The rest, just obese.

We really need to get past this whole 'average American woman' and 'Marylin was a size 12' nonsense. First of all, the Average American Woman is overweight and actually needs to lose for their health if not for their looks alone. So, being an 'average' woman isn't really something to strive for unless you are already as big as the side of a barn. Marylin was NEVER what a size 12 today is. Most of our slimmer women who wear 2s and 4s would have easily been an 8 or 10 in the 1950's before vanity sizing took hold. Overweight average women just want to think they are the same size as Marylin.
Sasha; it is interesting that you put that pic of Marylin up in response to Sweetie's comments. Some women loooove to think they have more in common with Marylin than they do with 'size 0' supermodels I suppose, but Marylin was hardly fat, even though she did get a big zaftig at one point in her career....weight that she had lost before she died, by the way. She did not stay that size but for a brief period.
And AABBCC: why is it that whenever we start talking about obese women, someone always has to say, 'well it's better than being a stick thin size 0' as though those are the only two alternatives available: Either be a fat pigg with more rolls than a bakery or be a praying mantis with a uterus and a cocaine habit. Jeez, there are a lot of sizes in between.

I never said Marilyn was fat. I said she is a pretty good representation of what an average American woman is today, which is about a size 14.

Over all, the new measurements shake up what have long been considered the average outlines of the American body. For years, an average woman was thought to be a size 8, although some circles had bumped that up to size 12 in recent years. But even the women who came in on the small side in the SizeUSA survey look more like what the longtime clothing industry standards would consider a size 14

Even at her biggest Marylin was tiny compared to the women in this book.
Leonard Nimoy has a right to photograph women of any size he choses, and I suppose in terms of attraction, there are fat fetichists out there, but let's not kid ourselves that this promotes any kind of a 'healthy' image.
And I must agree with crumpet-why must we talk in terms of extremes? It's not a choice between Beth Ditto or Allegra Versace-most women fall somewhere in between.

Crumpet ... when I made my comment about full-figured women, I was actually referring to the in-between women. And I thought that was what Nemoy was talking about too, until those pictures were posted.

The average American woman today doesn't have a body like hers, even at her largest. They just do not.

I understand. But we use so many euphemisms today that true meanings get lost and twisted. Curvy is code word for plump, full- figured used to mean built like Jane Russell and now it means chubby. If I hear one more fat cow talk about her 'curves' I'm gonna puke in her lap.

I agree 100%. Americans are obese and each year the trends get worse. If you have the time, google some of the public health maps on the subject. It's astounding how fat we've become in the last few decades. We should start calling a spade a spade and figure out how to fix it. This idea of poo-pooing fat men and women and somehow telling them they are "average" is dangerous and irresponsible.

The only reason that I would buy that book would be as an appetite suppressant. There is such a push now to make obesity acceptable. I see those descriptions all the time, "Oh I'm rubenesque or I'm fluffy". No you are obese. In some regards the world is just too PC. Obese is not healthy. Nimoy is misguided in trying to promote that it is. His models are happy in their skins, but should they be? I don't think so.
