I've listened to interviews with her, and she isn't remotely like her "Girls" character. She will pop up and say some unfortunate stuff sometimes that is eminently quotable.

She reminds me of a relative of mine. They’re always “sick” with some sort of chronic illness. All sorts of medical procedures. She moves on from one issue to the next. She completely wraps her identity in these issues. All conversations lead to her illnesses.

Ugggh! Yes! I know people like that. It's as if they have been ill for so long, they don't know any other way to be. Nor do they CARE to be. Illness is what defines them and gets them attention or provides an escape.

I have seen some people that were victims of severe abuse growing up, that as adults, they had major physical health issues but never got to the "root" of it. Some stuff is plain ol' physical crap that hits us all and then some of it, I often wonder, is psychological in origin that it weakened their physical conditions and feeling physically sick is better than facing the pain of their abuse, etc.

I have known at least 3 women with chronic conditions as an adult, that told me personally, they were sexually abused/molested growing up.

There should be a special place in hell for child molesters.

You should read "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel Van der Kolk. He talks a lot about the impact of trauma on physical health. It's not just in their mind or not just "feeling" sick, it really does affect lots of physical conditions affecting hormones, neurotransmitters, blood pressure, the CNS, etc.

i haven't read that book but it makes sense.

it's pretty sad. i have a HS friend on FB who was the most positive, upbeat, supportive person ever. now i cringe at her FB posts, they are all about her chronic pain. and i don't think she's making any of it up. pain can really consume you.

not sure that's the case with LD, though. she's just a self-involved annoying person who gives millennials a bad name.

I have a friend that does mental health therapy exclusively with people with chronic pain issues and she says almost all of them have significant trauma histories.
