She was my hero growing up. So many things stacked against her early in life, and she rose above it all to create such a magnificent existence. What an amazing life force, may she rest in peace.

I suppose we are not surprised when a lady of this age passes but I really wanted to keep her forever.

I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it - Maya Angelou

I follow Oprah on twitter and so far not a peep. Then again, if she's at her house in Cali, she may not be up yet. LOL

I think they called and let her know!! But still not a word from her on ig, either.

    In and Out of Time:
    Maya Angelou

    The sun has come.
    The mist has gone.
    We see in the distance...
    our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
    You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out of time.
When the first stone looked up at the blazing sun
and the first tree struggled up from the forest floor
I had always loved you more.
    You freed your braids...
gave your hair to the breeze.
It hummed like a hive of honey bees.
I reached in the mass for the sweet honey comb there....
Mmmm...God how I love your hair.
You saw me bludgeoned by circumstance.
    Lost, injured, hurt by chance.
I screamed to the heavens....loudly screamed....
Trying to change our nightmares into dreams...
    The sun has come.
    The mist has gone.
We see in the distance our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
    You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out
    in and out
    in and out
    of time.

It was obvious she had grown more frail these past few years and still I never gave a thought to her death. Somehow she seemed bigger than life,as if she could live forever just because we so willed her. There can never be another Maya. Her words were like beautiful jewels and seemed like they were directed to you alone. I loved her.

Well she will live forever, through her words.

TMZ reports Oprah has spoken and I thought what she said was perfect. Very fitting.

LOL - yes it is about her experience with Maya, but that is normal in death. We remember the person for what they meant to us.

Maya Angelou had a profound effect on many celebrities, but perhaps no one more than Oprah Winfrey.

Winfrey remembered the poet hours after Angelou died in Winston-Salem, N.C. at the age of 86, calling her "my mentor, mother/sister and friend."

Oprah Winfrey Remembers Her Mentor Maya Angelou - ABC News

"She was there for me always, guiding me through some of the most important years of my life," Winfrey wrote. "The world knows her as a poet but at the heart of her, she was a teacher. ‘When you learn, teach. When you get, give’ is one of my best lessons from her."

Angelou, who is survived by a son, is remembered by her many contributions to the world of literature.

Maya Angelou's Wisdom Distilled in 10 of Her Best Quotes

"She won three Grammys, spoke six languages and was the second poet in history to recite a poem at a presidential inauguration," Winfrey wrote.

The former talk show host, 60, explained that what she'll remember most about her friend was "how she lived her life."

"She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace. I loved her and I know she loved me," she recalled. "I will profoundly miss her. She will always be the rainbow in my clouds."
