Wow Charmed. What do they have you taking? I had gastric bypass and after about 18 months I was down to just a daily multi and a sublingual B12.

From what I can gather Kobalt Music Publishing is a "self publishing" company.

Music royalty hunter Kobalt wins Google funding - LA Times

Not saying that's a bad thing. It's much like self publishing books on Amazon. And lot of traditionally published authors have left publishing houses that only paid smaller (10% to 25% royalties) to publish on Amazon CreateSpace for paperbacks (35% to 45% royalties) and Kindle digital (70% royalties), and they can track sales daily. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me as if Kobalt is the Amazon of music publishing. The thing is, the musician has to pay all expenses to get the finished product ready to distribute. That means they have to pay for renting the studio, putting together the recording, etc.

It's the biggest independent music publishing company in the US.

And Amazon is the biggest independent book publisher in the business.

Pressing and distribution deals were common when I worked in the biz and if an artist could afford to pay for their own recordings they would make a lot more from sales than if they were signed to a regular record deal where they get a paltry royalty. The big expense is marketing but nowadays with social media it's a lot easier for an artist to promote themselves without the backing of a label.

Well yes, Amazon may be, but its not quite the same thing. Kobalt has big name artists on their roster like the Foo Fighters, Bob Marley, Radiohead, etc and they do much more than music publishing: marketing, distribution, label service, etc.Not that this will make her actual music any better though

I'm curious how much of a percentage would an independent publishing company take from sales?

^^ So this is pretty much like spitfire?

These people are nuts, they are now calling for a boycott of this company. They make no sense.

Pretty much DIY. But as WCG mentioned, they do offer additional services. I'm fairly certain the indie distribution route was the only option LeAnn had after leaving Curb; there's no way in hell any label was going to offer her anything of substance in this post-Napster world, what with her non-existant work ethic and dismal record sales.

Yeah, from a business POV no one would put up with her erratic behavior, cancelled dates, etc unless she brought in BIG money, and she doesn't. Shot herself in the foot labelwise.

Yeah, I don't see any shame in self-publishing, for her, or any artist for that matter. And at this point in her career it's probably the only way to do it, not like any big label is looking to sign her. The only thing that makes it mockable is all her OMG such BIG BIG news coming! and her constant whining about how she was stuck in the worst record deal in history! Bottom line, Spitfire sold like 13k copies, and she's playing county fairs and casinos. Again, no shame in that, except her delusions that she's so legendary and still a major singing star.
