I actually don't care if she was "baiting" him or not. Nobody HAS to take any bait, and if you do, shame on you. The real you gets exposed.

Was he aware he was being recorded? I'm guessing not. He's a total bigot asshole, but at 81 yrs old, are we shocked? He should just apologize and step down.

sidenote: until this scandal I wasn't aware LA had two basketball teams.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Donald Sterling’s Racism and the NBA - TIME

    "OPINION SPORTS
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Welcome to the Finger-Wagging Olympics
    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar @kaj33 April 28, 2014

It's time to look at ourselves — and our collective moral outrage — in the mirror, says former NBA player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Moral outrage is exhausting. And dangerous. The whole country has gotten a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome from the newest popular sport of Extreme Finger Wagging. Not to mention the neck strain from Olympic tryouts for Morally Superior Head Shaking. All over the latest in a long line of rich white celebrities to come out of the racist closet. (Was it only a couple days ago that Cliven Bundy said blacks would be better off picking cotton as slaves? And only last June Paula Deen admitted using the “N” word?)

Yes, I’m angry, too, but not just about the sins of Donald Sterling. I’ve got a list. But let’s start with Sterling. I used to work for him, back in 2000 when I coached for the Clippers for three months. He was congenial, even inviting me to his daughter’s wedding. Nothing happened or was said to indicate he suffered from IPMS (Irritable Plantation Master Syndrome). Since then, a lot has been revealed about Sterling’s business practices:

2006: U.S. Dept. of Justice sued Sterling for housing discrimination. Allegedly, he said, “Black tenants smell and attract vermin.”
2009: He reportedly paid $2.73 million in a Justice Dept. suit alleging he discriminated against blacks, Hispanics, and families with children in his rentals. (He also had to pay an additional nearly $5 million in attorneys fees and costs due to his counsel’s “sometimes outrageous conduct.”)
2009: Clippers executive (and one of the greatest NBA players in history) sued for employment discrimination based on age and race.
And now the poor guy’s girlfriend (undoubtedly ex-girlfriend now) is on tape cajoling him into revealing his racism. Man, what a winding road she led him down to get all of that out. She was like a sexy nanny playing “pin the fried chicken on the Sambo.” She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing themselves with glee.

They caught big game on a slow news day, so they put his head on a pike, dubbed him Lord of the Flies, and danced around him whooping.

I don’t blame them. I’m doing some whooping right now. Racists deserve to be paraded around the modern town square of the television screen so that the rest of us who believe in the American ideals of equality can be reminded that racism is still a disease that we haven’t yet licked.

What bothers me about this whole Donald Sterling affair isn’t just his racism. I’m bothered that everyone acts as if it’s a huge surprise. Now there’s all this dramatic and very public rending of clothing about whether they should keep their expensive Clippers season tickets. Really? All this other stuff I listed above has been going on for years and this ridiculous conversation with his girlfriend is what puts you over the edge? That’s the smoking gun?

He was discriminating against black and Hispanic families for years, preventing them from getting housing. It was public record. We did nothing. Suddenly he says he doesn’t want his girlfriend posing with Magic Johnson on Instagram and we bring out the torches and rope. Shouldn’t we have all called for his resignation back then?

Shouldn’t we be equally angered by the fact that his private, intimate conversation was taped and then leaked to the media? Didn’t we just call to task the NSA for intruding into American citizen’s privacy in such an un-American way? Although the impact is similar to Mitt Romney’s comments that were secretly taped, the difference is that Romney was giving a public speech. The making and release of this tape is so sleazy that just listening to it makes me feel like an accomplice to the crime. We didn’t steal the cake but we’re all gorging ourselves on it.

Make no mistake: Donald Sterling is the villain of this story. But he’s just a handmaiden to the bigger evil. In our quest for social justice, we shouldn’t lose sight that racism is the true enemy. He’s just another jerk with more money than brains.

So, if we’re all going to be outraged, let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars.

The big question is “What should be done next?” I hope Sterling loses his franchise. I hope whoever made this illegal tape is sent to prison. I hope the Clippers continue to be unconditionally supported by their fans. I hope the Clippers realize that the ramblings of an 80-year-old man jealous of his young girlfriend don’t define who they are as individual players or as a team. They aren’t playing for Sterling—they’re playing for themselves, for the fans, for showing the world that neither basketball, nor our American ideals, are defined by a few pathetic men or women.

Let’s use this tawdry incident to remind ourselves of the old saying: “Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.” Instead of being content to punish Sterling and go back to sleep, we need to be inspired to vigilantly seek out, expose, and eliminate racism at its first signs.

Well stated! (Except that we do not yet know if the taping was illegal.)

Jabbar is wrong about one thing though. The person who recorded the racist will not get on Celebrity Apprentice since the Donald is blasting her for being a bad mistress. LOL

Even if it wasn't illegal, it was shitty to release it. And I'm assuming she was black mailing him with it because of the suit against her. The last I checked it's not illegal to be an asshole in the privacy of your own home. Jabbar made the comparison with Romney and I agree. This wasn't a public rant. I think we've all said things that we're glad weren't recorded.. At least once or twice.

Also, I don't understand why he wasn't punished before? Those things in my opinion, were worse.

I know. He was punished in court but the NBA didn't care. From what I read, he settled "without an admission of guilt" so that may have prevented the NBA from acting??

You should definitely be up on your state laws regarding recording conversations. It's illegal in Maryland, so no matter how justified you are, you can't go taping phone conversations or other conversations without the other person's knowledge in consent (for reference, see Linda Tripp). I guess it's not illegal in California, so if you are a racisty racist, you need to use hand signals or something if you don't want people to find out what you are all about.

I'll have to check on Ohio. Good heads up!

It is illegal in California. But I heard she is saying that he asked her to record him because he was losing his memory and wanted to keep track of what he promised her.

I can only imagine those hand signals. Jesus...

I'm sure he will have no memory of having asked her to tape him... LOL

It's illegal to record without consent here in PA but is/was legal in NJ. Divorce lawyers were well known for telling clients to go to a pay phone in NJ, with a witness that they were calling from NJ, and record phone calls.

So is this Sterling still married to his wife (or is she an ex) ? He just had a active girlfriend on the side that the wife didn't know or care about? I assumed he had been divorced awhile and this young gal was his new piece.

He is still married but they live separate lives. He has had a series of mistresses over the years and was sued by one about 10 years ago too.

The deposition is here. It's pretty funny. The mistress called his wife. The mistress Alexandra Castro also lived with Mike Tyson for a bit. In the deposition he outlines a story he claims Amex told him about how she "auditioned" with a screener to then get to meet Mike if the screener decided the sex was good enough. The old man is a racist, and treats women like shit, but he is brutally honest.

NBA Owner Donald Sterling In Sex Scandal | The Smoking Gun

Sordid Subplot Appears To Show Another Ugly Side Of Donald Sterling

The recent events are an echo of a side of Donald Sterling that was revealed in a deposition he gave in 2003 in yet another lawsuit involving yet another apparent mistress. It chronicles Sterling's self-reported lifestyle that featured blow jobs in the back of limos, an apparent foot fetish and, in the simplest terms, "sex for money." The Smoking Gun published the incomplete deposition, from which pages are missing.

Here's how Sterling summarized his view of his alleged mistress, Alexandra Castro, back then, after apparently being asked if she had ever been to an abortion clinic: "I wouldn't have had a child and certainly not with that piece of trash."

"This girl is the lowest form ... She is a freak. A total freak," he said. "I knew from the day she came in that she was a total freak and a piece of trash."

But despite that low view of her, Sterling seemed to revel in relaying every sordid detail of their affair. He describes a time when the woman told him "how much she wants to suck me and takes my shoes off and licks my feet" before she would take her clothes off in a limo and perform oral sex.

"Her best sex was better than words could express," Sterling said while under oath, explaining a note he had apparently given the mistress that said: "I adore you more than words can express."

"That is the best sex of all the women I have ever had," he said. "Because she asked, 'Am I the best sex you ever had?' ... That is all she ever provided was sex, nothing else."

Sterling described the couple's sexual escapades "all over my building, in my bathroom, upstairs, in the corner, in the elevator." He explained at one point that the woman was explicitly "providing sex for money."

"She came usually after everybody left because that is when she wanted to have sex," he said, "and that is when she needed her money."

It does appear that the pair occasionally went out in public, as Sterling said the woman would "show up" if he told he was going shopping. "But I didn't go shopping for her," he made clear. "I wouldn't want to buy anything for the woman. I was giving her enough money for sex."

"But if I was buying myself something and she started to cry that she wanted something, then maybe I would," he went on. "The girl always cried, never had any money, always talked about sex and how I was so cheap."

Sterling was sure to paint the woman as endlessly willing to satisfy him.

"She just stripped every time you saw the woman," he said. "I have never seen anything like it in my life."

And Sterling seemed eager to spread his affections to every women he knew.

"Every secretary is honey. I'm a very flowery man," he said in the last page offered by The Smoking Gun. "If you are having sex with a woman you are paying for, you always call her honey because you can't remember her name."
