The Kardashian Kulture has permeated the young (and young ish). It's really depressing.

^Yep, I have a fb friend, a former colleague. A practicing Jew, very bright etc. Well, his wife, who has to be at least 35 and a mother of two, has the duck lips thing down pat in. every. photo. You're asking me what being bright and Jewish has to do with that? Well, I didn't expect a woman who's supposed to have traditional values, married to an intellectual, well into her thirties, and a mum, to act like that. I mean, of all people.
What are you seeing with the kids?

Most of all, makeup, hair, clothes. But there's also this fascination with selfies. An endless stream of them. A colleague caught a student taking a selfie in class. She was unapologetic. To them, it really matters. It's not only the Kardashian influence, it ties in with a pervasive culture of narcissism. Plus there's this feeling that while they're sitting in class, they're watching a reality show, so some of them comment upon what's taking place as if they were in front of the TV with a friend watching the Jersey Shore or whatever.
I watched a group of teens in the waiting room of a doctor's office pull out phones and selfie. (Yeah, I verb-ed that!) Pout, pose at a weird angle, check picture, retake with friend, post, repeat. It was fascinating. I felt like Jane Goodall.

I am seeing this amongst lawyers I work with who are in their 20's. They are Kardashian obsessed (and not embarrassed about it), buying Kylie lip kits, reality show obsessed, selfie obsessed. It's bizarre because these are women who are 27, 28 years old. I was a mom at that age and didn't act that way. They aren't much younger than me but the generational divide seems huge.

True. I have to think Shellee is right.
Not true for me, I have always hated being photographed.

Same here. I hate my face, the photo version even more so. Besides, do you really need ten daily pics of you??
As for the Kardashian influence, I was noticing that my students who used to wear their hair really long and highlighted suddenly cut it to shoulder length and dyed it black. Guess who had that specific makeover? Kim. She's still the most popular member of the family. The second most popular being Kylie whose lips and eyebrows definitely set the trend.
Re narcissism, one of my colleagues is teaching some equivalent of liberal studies. She asked why our national holiday (Bastille Day) was on July 14. One of the students : "oh, one of my friends' birthday is on July 14!". Teacher : "yes, but that's not the reason, is it?". She also mentioned that more and more students will use private anecdotes in their essay when the topic is, you know, culture. Another colleague who teaches the same course always makes his students read the novel Bel Ami (story of an upstart who ruthlessly uses women to get to a situation of wealth and social privilege). He said that a few years ago, his students were all "omg, such an immoral character!". Now it's "it takes what it takes to succeed, I admire his determination".
tl.dr - I guess reality TV has a lot to answer for.
