'Cause they didn't have chapels back then, and vows to exchange and all that stuff.

What I'm wondering is, they had kids, right? But then those kids must have had kids... by having sex with each other, I presume. Generation after generation.

Shouldn't we all have horrible birth defects seeing as we're all the result of extreme inbreeding?

Well, Cain goes off and marries a girl from elsewhere so the story (unsurprisingly) doesn't stand up to scientific scrutiny.

Its a teaching story about self-awareness, responsibility, sentience, etc. And yeah, its questionable that Adam and Eve WERE married, which makes Kirk's usage of their story as a model marriage doubly hilarious.
