Unfortunately it only takes one for fetal alcohol syndrome. A woman doesn't need to be a drunk, or drink regularly for their child to be affected by FAS. Just one glass can do it in the first trimester. Quite scary when you think about it - how many women know they're pregnant that early?

I'm not sure where you get your information but that is just not true. It's scare tactics spread by wanna-be prohibitionists. I mean, seriously, you really think one drink can cause fetal alcohol syndrome? Get realistic.

I was mistaken to give the impression it would happen to every fetus with just one drink. FAS can be caused by just one drink, it just won't happen to all women who do drink during pregnancy. There have been studies done on the effects of alcohol to a fetus and it seems to be a hit or miss situation. Some are affected by a drink or two, others can withstand full-blown alcoholism.

I've seen both sides of the issue - women who were diligent about what went in their bodies yet still had a child with a serious health issue, other women who approached pregnancy like it was their last chance to hit every keg & snort party in the area and they get a perfectly healthy child (or four).

The long-short of it is you just don't know until the child develops (unless pre-birth testing shows obvious abnormalities) but to carry on like a party girl and assume that just because the other three were "okay" (even though she was in/out of hospital with miscarriage scares and the last one was born too early) this one will be fine as well is testament to how thick she is.
