Hmm, makes me wonder about the Strawberry Snort 'em blind now. I always thought Katy couldn't get away with drugs round an ex-addict/user (they're like bloodhounds at being able to spot someone else doing it) but as she's been away so much and if he found out after the fact or someone else's tongue slipped...

I know she's not a crazy fundie Christian anymore (she started out as a Christian singer), but she claims to still be a Christian and I thought he was an avowed atheist. I just could never see him settling down for the long haul with anyone who was religious, used to be religious or is surrounded by a super-religious family. And I think her fault was in marrying Russell Brand if religion was going to be important to her at all, even just for the sake of her parents. She tried to call him her "man of God" and shit like that, and it's just...no. Don't try and make over your spouse into something he or she is not.

And isn't he sober and she...isn't? I mean, she makes no secret of her love of booze. Not that it means a marriage cannot work out if one is sober, one isn't. Just always wondered how well that sat with Brand.

I don't think that having fundamentally different beliefs is the issue. Taking someone & wanting to change them completely is. Maybe he got sick of being her sockpuppet?

It depends. As Novice said, it's a problem if they want to change each other. My brother is an atheist and his wife is Muslim, and it works for them.

So he's supposedly filed for divorce rather than her because he wants to spare the feelings of her deeply Christian parents who'd be upset if she did it? Not buying it. If they are all gung-ho about the sanctity of marriage then they won't be happy about a divorce no matter which of them files. Strawberry Snort 'Em is sounding more and more likely now, which surprises me as I was initially thinking of her as a Not when I read it.
