EXCLUSIVE: The secret side of Kanye West: Family reveal his young 'mild-mannered and shy' nature... as sweet childhood photos emerge

By ANDY TILLETT IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND FOR DAILYMAIL.COM
    PUBLISHED: 18:42, 30 April 2015 | UPDATED: 19:32, 30 April 2015

Last week Bruce Jenner revealed a side of Kanye West that few get to see as he shared a touching story about how the rapper helped wife Kim Kardashian understand the former Olympian's transition.
And now his sensitive side could once again be seen in never-before-seen pictures of the All Of The Lights hitmaker as a child sitting patiently on the Washington DC Metro with his hands folded and a thoughtful look in his eye.
While Jay-Z dealt drugs and shot his own brother and Snoop Dogg was once charged with being an accessory to murder, Kanye learned to speak Chinese and do Tai Chi when he was ten and grew up in the middle class South Shore area of Chicago.

Back in the day: Kanye West is pictured at the young age of nine while enjoying a ride on the Washington DC metro in never before seen images

Although his late mother, Donda, and his father, Ray, divorced when he was three, they remained amicable and Kanye lived with his mother but spent summers with his father.
It was on one such visit that the now 37-year-old rapper met future stepmother Brenda Bentley, who shared this exclusive snap of him aged nine.
She remembers him as a mild mannered boy who wouldn’t dare interrupt his father - let alone an awards ceremony - and always called her 'Miss Brenda.'
She recalls: 'We were on the Metro because we were going to a parade downtown.
'He was with his father, so he knew he had to behave. Ray wasn’t too strict as a dad, and it was summer – so that was playtime.

All grown up: the 37-year-old All Of The Lights hitmaker - pictured in New York on Friday - has become one of the biggest rappers in the world and found himself in one of the highest-profile relationships in Showbiz

'Kanye was a curious person, he asked a lot of questions, his parents always encouraged him to do that. The kind of questions were not the kind of questions I’d have thought of a nine year old asking. He was pretty smart.
'He was quick with his responses, he said what was on his mind but he was never rude.'
Last week Bruce Jenner shed a little more light on Kanye's softer side in his now famous 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer.
The 65-year-old reality star said it was the father of 20-month-old North who counciled wife Kim Kardashian into understanding her stepfather's gender identity.
'Kim told me a story. She goes, "You know what really turned me around on thinking about this?" I said, "What?" She goes, "Kanye." I went, "Oh, okay,"' Bruce said.
'[Kanye] says to Kim "Look, I can be married to the most beautiful woman in the world, and I am. I can have the most beautiful little daughter in the world, and I have that. But I'm nothing if I can't be me. If I can't be true to myself, they don't mean anything."'

Ambition: This was another family photo shared of a more grown up Kanye hanging out with a male chum

The 6ft2in athlete - born William - stressed: 'Since then, Kimberly has been, by far, the most accepting, and the easiest to talk to about it.'

Kanye was a sharp child and university professor Donda – who died unexpectedly after a cosmetic surgery procedure in 2007 – even took him to live in China for a year as part of an exchange programme when he was ten, where he learned many new things, and even exported some American culture.
In her book, Raising Kanye, she recalled: 'One day I noticed he was eating a skewer of sheep meat. I had not given him money, so wondered how he had bought it. He’d been charging the other kids to see him breakdance. He could spin on his head and everything. Fearing he may break his neck or something, I had always forbade him to do it.'
In preparation for their trip abroad Donda had tried to expose Kanye to different cultures and taken him to sample the cuisines of the world including Mexican, Japanese and French - although stubborn the stubborn young star would always order the same thing, a hamburger and fries.
Back in Chicago, Donda – who had a doctorate degree in English Education and eventually became chairwoman of Chicago State University’s English department – was focused on educating her son, and took him to free art classes while restricting the number of hours of TV he was allowed to watch.
He also had chores – including washing the dishes, mopping the kitchen floor, making his bed, cleaning his room cleaning the bathtub, taking out the trash and cutting the lawn.
Donda wrote: 'Kanye knew what was expected of him at school, he had to make good grades or else.
'I had the black middle class ethic that said you must go to school, do very well and get at least one degree and probably more.'

Revealing: Bruce Jenner shared a touching story about Kanye during last week's famous 20/20 interview with 20/20's Diane Sawyer as he revealed himself to be a woman

Tremendous trio: The 65-year-old star is pictured here with the rapper and his wife Kim Kardashian at an X Factor taping in Los Angeles in November 2012

As his parents had split when he was six months old and divorced when he was an infant, Kanye never knew any other than two separate parents and never complained about his upbringing.
Brenda – who was with Ray in the eighties for a couple of years before cooling things off, only to rekindle the romance and get engaged to him in the late two-thousands - says he was always receptive to her and never 'sized her up' or 'held her at arms length'.
Ray, now 65, had worked as a photographer in Atlanta, Georgia and even been involved in the Black Panthers when he was a student at the University of Delaware, and was also keen to nurture his son’s artistic interests.
Brenda, 59, remembered: 'He used to take him to the park a lot, and museums – every week they’d look through the local paper and find all the events.
'Kanye loved museums and art galleries, they’d check out special showings and gallery viewings, film festivals, some very highbrow stuff.
'He used to love animations, artsy stuff, not Disney, that was too mundane. His father helped him to develop sophisticated tastes and become culturally rich.'

Despite being a university professor, Donda claimed she was by no means rich and had to sometimes work two or three jobs, mainly teaching and lecturing, to make ends meet.
She noticed her son’s musical talents when he was eight and always encouraged him to pursue his music and drawing, although she obviously spoiled him, giving him $1,000 [677pounds] for his 14th birthday - which he spent on the keyboard with which he would start his music career.
Donda wrote: 'I rarely denied Kanye anything … I was very clever in saving my money and finding ways to give him things and exposing him to things without breaking our bank. Sometimes I would shuffle the bills to make sure he had something.'
Meanwhile, Kanye has himself described how his father occasionally struggled a little more to make ends meet.
He told Complex magazine: 'I remember he was in vacuum cleaner sales and he’d sit up there and show people how powerful the vacuum cleaner was by putting a penny on the floor and then the vacuum cleaner over it and then Pop! It would come out and he would have bent the penny.
'I remember some days we would ride around and he had vacuum cleaners in the back and we’d be going up a hill and the car would stop. And I just see him, like, "Not today. Not today."'
Kanye did well at high school and enrolled in the Chicago university where Donda was chair, but by that time his career as a producer was taking off and he got his big break in 2000 making tracks for Jay-Z’s album The Blueprint.

New lady in his life: The rapper married the 34-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star last year as they were pictured together in the Big Apple last week

However, his next breakthrough was borne out of tragedy. Kanye crashed his car after a recording session in Los Angeles and was laid up in hospital for weeks, with a painful wire restructuring his jaw.
This gave him the chance to start on what would later become his debut album, The College Dropout, which would catapult him to fame.
Within a couple of years Kanye would become the slotted-shades wearing, ranting, fashion-conscious star we know today.
Kanye’s more megalomanic behaviour arguably began in 2006 when he stormed the stage at the MTV European Music Awards to declare he should have won the Best Video trophy instead of dance music act Justice.
But those around him say he started to get out of control after the death of Donda following a breast reduction operation in 2007, when he plunged into a deep, dark period.

'He did not have his anchor': His stepmother Brenda attributes bizarre incidents like Kanye's infamous moment interrupting Taylor Swift's speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009 to not having his mother around

That sad event inspired his next album, 808s And Heartbreak, but Brenda thinks it also informed the next few years of his career and his increasingly wild and showy behaviour were actually covering for the pain he felt deep down inside.
She said: 'After Donda’s passing, when I was around him he seemed like he really held it together well, but you really grieve in those private times.
'In getting his career back, he held it together. But you could see the cracks.
'It left a gaping hole in Kanye’s life. Donda was his everything.'
She marks out Kanye’s most famous stage invasion – when he grabbed a mic off Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards to declare Beyonce should have won – as another cry for help.
She said: 'When the Taylor Swift incident happened, I could tell he was flapping in the wind. Because he did not have his anchor. To know him you could see the little cracks. People didn’t appreciate his circumstances. He had just lost the person who meant the most to him of anyone in the world.'

Proud papa: since the death of his mother, Donda, Kanye has started a family of his own with 34-year-old wife Kim as they had daughter North in June 2013, as they were pictured together at LAX on April 16

I'm surprised they don't have that poor kids hair slicked back as usual. She can't pull off the Blue Ivy look.

I can't help but not hate Kanye. I know he's a fool and an antagonist for marrying a Kardashian but when I heard College Dropout for the first time and "Hey Mama" (a beautiful ode to his mother) came on I couldn't help but fall in love with him just a little. But I'll tell you, if any one thing nearly turned my love to hate it was definitely that abomination Kim.

^ I know. It is going to get much worse and the one who will go krazy (more krazy) is him, not the abomination.

    Kanye West

Gives Graduating Fashion Students a Reality Check

5/30/2015 6:59 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

    Exclusive Details
    HERE'S MY ADVICE ...TMZ.com

Kanye West was the inspiration Friday night for the graduating class at a prestigious fashion school.
Kanye was front and center for the runway show held by graduating fashion students at L.A. Trade Tech College, we're told he went backstage prior to the event to give the students encouragement, sat in the front row during the show, and then spoke in classic Kanye style.
The most memorable line ... "When you're the best you get hated on the most."
The school is the same place Kanye did his community service for his assault case involving the LAX attack on a photog. But we've learned Kanye already completed his community service, so he didn't have to show for the event. He just wanted to.

Oh, totally. Just look at Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela.

    Please.

He's a dolt but I have no doubt that he truly believes he and his wife are the best. At everything. He's an idiot.

Stop trying to bring me back. Yeah you were a cute kid. And I'm sorry you lost your mama. But you're a Kard now. In a forever way. You've mingled DNA.
