i don't think he was implying that he thought about "raw spaces" or w/e in 1983 when he was 12, but when he got older and decided to move to NYC, that his idea of what it would be like was what he remembered Flashdance being like when he saw it as a kid.
sort of how when i got to high school i fully expected it to be like beverly hills, 90210. because i grew up watching that as a little girl. and of course i was way off. maybe because i lived in connecticut lol

I liked the quote about the pictures too. A few are ok but I have one friend who has tons and tons of framed family photos everywhere. Definite overkill, like don't you see these people every day? My pics lean more towards cute ones of my pets, past and present. But not all over the house.

Have to agree with him on sandals, but for both sexes. Had to go shopping and summer in TX = everyone in sandals, no matter how horrifying their feet are. I am still traumatized. I know, I know, they have the right to air their nasty-ass feet, and I could have kept my eyes above gnarly toe level.

I'm from the south, everyone wears sandals here. It's hot. I can't be bothered to notice. If I noticed feet in sandals, that would be all I did all day long. Wearing sandals in NYC doesn't seem like a great idea for several reasons but here, it's just what you do.
