Their family are freaky. The mother AND the father. At least Jessica's mother seems relatively normal. And what's with these minister, or god loving parents flaunting their child's purity and virginity?
*shudders* Freaks.

I do think some of these kids are forced into wearing purity rings by overzealous parents and youth ministers, and that's unfortunate. However, it seems like the Jonas brothers chose this for themselves, and I don't think the idea of a teenager wanting to wait until marriage is anything that should be made fun of or put down. I personally believe that there are many reasons, not just religious, why it's a good idea to wait. If they can help some kids feel better about their own decisions to wait or even encourage some kids to really think about it and make that decision for the first time, I don't see how that could be a bad thing.

Promoting this idea of "purity" is just as bad, if not worse, than the oversexualization of teen celebrities.
Sex is just sex people, it should not be used to define someone's character--i.e. you're either a "whore" or "pure." Besides, I'm a firm believer that a significant percentage of teens will have sex anyway, so to make them feel guilt and shame because of a natural behavior IS being irresponsible. It becomes a big secret and that in itself prevents adequate sex education.
I never looked at Britney and said "oooh I want to be a whore too!" and I don't think most teenagers are looking at the Jonas Bros. and thinking "I want to be a virgin too!" But for them to be getting CREDIT for saying they are "saving" themselves or some other sort of bullshit...well it just teaches kids that you get positive attention for claiming to be a virgin. And, again, I think that leads to a hush-hush situation that causes more problems.
Just my 2 cents. Besides, I love sex and as long as someone is safe and emotionally mature enough to handle it, I'm all for sexual freedom.

How about a "Waiting till im mature and responsible enough not to mention emotionally ready for sex" ring?
|
Exactly.
My mother never told me to wait until I was married or tried to scare me off of sex, she just said to wait until I was "ready" and "mature enough". And that's exactly what I did.
Give your kids all the information they need to make their own informed and responsible decision, and chances are that they will make the right decision. Sex itself is not the enemy.

To me, the saddest part is the death of communication about it.. one will stray sooner or later. There can be no "cover your tool" discussion. He will have no one to ask about things beforehand or after. Not even his brothers.

In other news, the Jonas Brothers have discussed their after-show hotel "prayer circles" where they affirm their love for god with female fans. You know what they say, the couple that prays together, stays together...

I remember telling my teenage son to keep it wrapped if he was going to use it. The look on his face ...

Why do these celebrity kids have to be sexualized in any way? Can't we just focus on the music or the acting? I bet this kind of bullshit doesn't happen in Europe. We're such a bunch of prudes in North America and it's getting progressively annoying.

How about a "none of your fucking business and 'go blow yourself' for asking! (this includes you too, mom and dad)" ring? That's one I probably would have loved even way before I lost my virginity.
Somewhere in my jewelry box I have a chunky silver ring shaped like a skull that I got about 14-15 years ago. That would work beautifully.

I was about to say something to this affect. I think that honesty is the best policy, my mother was very blunt about the topic and told me at a early age. So it never felt like there was some secret bad thing I was missing out on. But I know people who were told that it was a bad evil thing and fucked the first guy they could to see what it was all about.
I really don't care if that is something that these boys actually want for themselves and have really thought about the matter. But it really does seem that the parents force this upon people.

That was the best, most practical advice you could have given.

Funny you mention that, because I was just remembering the statement she made as a teenager about staying a virgin until married.
Excuse me for a moment.
