Bet her parents did not have a clue before this. Also bet they jump on this with both feet. They have the money and can pay for a round-the-clok supervisor/nanny. One way or abother her heroin days are over, until she turns 21 and hopefully gains some sense.

I just don't know how people get involved with this stuff to begin with. It never ends well...

I hope this was an isolated event, but I don't think it is common to start out shooting heroin. So maybe she has been doing drugs for awhile now. Maybe the Ian guy busted with her is a new boyfriend from college, and she is hanging with the wrong crowd.

I do hope she takes this as a BIG wake up call and accepts help from her parents to turns things around. Jon and his wife do seem like the type of parents that will step up and try to guide her. I don't think I have ever heard anything about his kids in the press before now.

you don't have to shoot heroin anymore. going back to the 90's it's gotten much purer, so no need for needles. which is why it's become more widely used than it was back in the 60's and 70's. at least the needles made people cautious.

My cousin is an alcoholic (25+ years sober) and she does a lot of work with alcoholics and recovering drug addicts. The ones she dreads the most are heroin addicts. In her personal experience, she says they are terrible prospects for kicking the habit.

Two good friends of hers had an 18 year old son who was addicted to heroin and was in a treatment facility. On the day that he was released there was some kind of mix up, and he walked out by himself (without his parents to pick him up). He immediately went out and scored some more heroin. She said they found him in his childhood bed, unconscious from an overdose. He died soon after.

She has three sons now - like 15 to 22. She has occasionally smelled pot in the bedrooms. She told me that the first time she detected it she told them, "You know that your father and I are both alcoholics. We're not exactly happy about you smoking pot, but we can live with that. But if you ever do heroin, you will kill me."

It's very true. And the prescription pills that have become an addiction epidemic in the past few years are all opiates as well. Dangerous stuff.

Oh, okay, thank you. I wasn't aware of that. I was never around heroin as a kid, but always assumed it was just shot up with needles. That is scary it is even purer now, and doesn't have the added scare of needles being involved. Sad.

Grew up in a rich neighborhood with richer neighborhoods around me. It always surprised me that doing heroin was associated with slums, as rich young women seem to LOVE their heroin.

Ah, but having 4 generations of family that have attended Hamilton, I have never once heard the word Kirkland and Hamilton in the same reference.

Even the best of families can have a drug addict in them. Having money could make it better. Sure they have the means for the best rehabs in the world, but it all boils down to if she wants to quit. Nothing you can do until the hit rock bottom and she is the only one who knows what or when that will be. Went through all of this with my daughter and it's heartache. BUT people can get clean and come back from this. I hope this girl can.

i didn't know heroin was associated with slums. growing up in switzerland in the 90s, it was all over the place and it was always white middle or upper middle class kids doing it. and emo artsy types.
