The idea that you have to be protected from your own government in a "democracy" like the US should make people wonder about the people they elect, and for those who don't vote, why they don't.

It wouldn't even protect you from the police.

you can always try barricading yourself in a ranch in montana with other gun-loving, guv'ment-fearing psychos and try creating your own republic... oh, wait. never mind.

Ask our founding fathers why. If they hadn't had arms, they would have never been able to defeat the British. BTW, we aren't a democracy. We're Representative Republic.
And if I could, I'd clear about 90% of the elected politicians in power today. Power does corrupt- and both sides of the aisle. So I use the only power I can- my voice, my vote.

Popping the magazine in and cocking the gun takes maybe a second at most (this is something you practice with dummy bullets until it is in your muscle memory). My point is, you train for this kind of situation until you are as quick as you would be if you just picked up a bat (another deadly weapon).

My safe (for my valuables) has a lit keypad, and I can hardly open that fucker in the middle of the day when I'm well rested. I can't imagine what I would do if I had to get a gun out of a safe in the middle of the night having just been awakened by a sound of someone in my house. That's why I have the bat. I can grab that and swing with my eyes closed.
Seriously though, I have no issue with people owning guns. What you said about responsible gun owners is totally true. Unfortunately that's not how it always works. Best laid plans and all that, probably.

One wonders who the Elian Gonzalez case would have been different had they been armed. But hey, they government should have the right to take children away by gunpoint.

lol
the paranoia really is quite comical. as for elian gonzalez, he was returned to his biological father and i don't see what's wrong with that. and what does it have to do with guns? it probably makes sense in your head but i fail to see the connection.
as for the founding fathers, this is what i mean about constitution fetishism. this was over 200 years ago. the world is a different place. the constitution is not the bible, it should be allowed to change and evolve. it's not the political equivalent of the 10 commandments, written in stone.

Yeah, but the king of England isnt going to be knocking on your door anytime soon The need for guns against the invasion of a similarely armed force makes sense... but a popgun against brigades of assault rifle armed troops and/or munitions isn't really realistic lol

Judging from the last election, votes don't even matter anymore.

No, they would have just waited it out, blasted them out with loud music, or gassed them to unconsciousness.

No, it is who we are as a country. If you eliminate the founding principles of the Constitution, you no longer have freedom. You can call it fetishism all you want. But without that document, this country would not exist- 200 years ago or now.
Oh, and the Constitution has evolved. Its called amendments- several of them, in fact. It will continue to evolve.
And considering the anniversary we have tomorrow... well, I guess me posting any more would be pointless. I love my country and all of its freedoms- and the choices that freedom allows me. Including owning a gun.
Enjoy the continued debate! Peace out.

The 2nd ammendment is just a leftover from revolutionary times.. I suppose the meaning for it could be adapted for hunting (though a personal weapon like a 9mm glock is meant for one thing, killing a person) or home defense and whatnot..
but realistically, it's not going to protect you from any organized military force

What a interesting read...The US sure has a love affair with the gun.
There is a figure of around 30 thousand people killed a year in the US from guns.If that were to happen in any other developed country in the world all hell would break lose from the general public...In the US there is hardly a whisper.
I can understand the fear of a power mad govt with military take overs...Stalin to Tito to the Butchers in Iraq. Its a hard one this...Its to hard for my simple brain.

If Britney were to shoot herself in the head tonight, we may all have a different opinion about guns.
