Her comments on Palestine showed her true colours. She was either willfully ignorant or an out and out liar. I say good riddance. I also say I don't care how funny people thought she was when she was "on"; at least she revealed her true self as a final parting 'gift.'

Loved her fearless persona. Damn, I'm like actually getting choked up in here. It's the end of an era.

    Love you, Joan!

She later clarified what she meant. People have very strong feelings about that situation, and she answered an impromptu question from a cameraman on a loud public sidewalk and likely wasn't as articulate as she could have been. Her "true colors" about the subject seemed to be that she thinks Israel was unfairly attacked, and Hamas set up its own civilians to get killed. Not that controversial an opinion, really. Even well-spoken, well-educated public speakers can get tripped up sometimes, let alone an 81-year-old entertainer.

I love this clip from her reality show where she spreads her friend's ashes all over Rodeo Drive:

She said she has 'been there' (Israel) and that's how she knows the situation. She also stated this (rockets from hamas) has been 'going on for months.' Given she has been to Israel in the past (not in the last few months) she would be well aware the situation has been going on for decades and not merely 'months' and cannot, and should not be framed as one 'incident' (ie. starting at the kidnapping of the 3 Israeli boys), because it's disingenuous at best, outright lying at worst.

Therefore when she said 'this has been going on for months' she was deliberately lying about the entire situation in order to re-frame the situation to 'prove' the Palestinians deserve to be dead, using her "I've been there" as her authority to make such a claim.

Thank you for clarifying though, I appreciate it. However I stand by my claim that the original rant showed who she really was and her clarification didn't help her much.

Anyway sorry if I have derailed the thread, as you can all probably guess, I'm not a fan of whitewashing the dead.

Her grandson's gonna look back on some good times. She was so feisty and ready to spar.

I'm so sad for Melissa. They seemed very close.

But you're clearly a fan of summing up an 81 year long life into one sound bite.

RIP Joan. One of my earliest memories is of being about 4 and staying up late to watch her talk show so I could tell my mother what she wore the next day.

I grew up on her too. It was always a treat for me when she guest hosted on The Tonight Show. I even loved her on Fashion Police. As many times as my jaw would drop hearing her latest insult to a celeb who likely deserved it, she was funny as hell. I never heard her views on anything political, and don't care. I'm happy to have been a Joan Ranger.

    Statement from Melissa:

"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," she said. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

I remember when she said that, too funny and true, at least the IUD part.
