^Still that's a little too "blame the victim" for my liking. They're not doing anything wrong or illegal, and it's not their fault there are some scummy people out there wanting to invade their privacy. No they don't have to do it, but why shouldn't they have the right to their privacy that the rest of us expect?

And polaroids are fun but they're no good for sending pics, which it sounds like a lot of these are ie sending them to lovers etc. Again, they don't have to do it, but if that's what they want to do in private then they should be able to, just like the rest of us.

eta Mo said it in less words.

It does happen to a lot of regular ol' people. With sites like the dirty(dot)com and revenge porn sites...

Yes, it's mostly vengeful ex's posting pictures through these sites (as opposed to the pictures being stolen, although who knows, hackers can be hacking into regular people's computers and selling those photos to dating/sex sites too) Regardless, they are intimate pictures specifically for a specific someone's eyes only. There are many types of betrayal - downright stolen pictures is definitely the ultimate, fame or no fame.

    My humble opinion

But you can't really compare being hacked to sending nudie pics to someone who turns out to be a douche and posts them online. It's still a shitty thing to do, but it's not the same as having your privacy invaded by a hacker. You know there's a risk as soon as you hit Send.

^^ I would say that it's more about the sheer numbers affected by hacker as well as the fact that these pictures were obtained by illegal means rather than being freely given. This isn't a bitter ex sending intimate photos to a girl's parents or colleagues (which will also get you busted over here, by the way), this is someone deliberately targeting names and faces over a period of time and breaching the online security of their personal accounts.

Edit: That was directed at another poster who seems to have deleted their comment....

yeah, i'm a little tired of the blaming the victim bullshit too. nobody HAS to take nude pictures, some people CHOOSE to. Nobody HAS to use a bank or have a 401K or shop at Target or Home Depot... but I guess if you do, you know the risk and should not bother complaining when your information is compromised too.

Of course. These whores should quit with the nude selfies and start being decent, moral citizens like the rest of us who never show an inch of skin to a member of the opposite sex and even wear special modesty suits in the shower. Can't be too careful ladies! One bare nip or a hint of clunge could lead to the end of civilisation as we know it!

They do? I had no idea. I think I just need to stop commenting on this whole thing because it is really out of my depth. Like I said before. I'm just cranky about it. I don't know why.

I think it's frustrating because people like to have some measure of control over their lives, including private information. When people don't trust the security measures in place, they sometimes default to saying that if the person just didn't have/do that thing that other people wanted, there wouldn't be a problem. But I think that only serves to take away people's enjoyment of their lives and their natural right to make decisions for themselves without worrying about being stalked, marginalized/criticized or burglarized, etc.

To me, the nude selfies are really just the canary in the coal mine. I know it's mortifying, but it's not like having your life savings or your identity stolen. This should be a lesson for the larger IT/financial/service provider industry to retrench and come up with better security measures. And help educate end users about how to secure their digital information.

Revenge sites are big, big business and they don't care and don't check if it's a real picture or someone's head photoshopped onto a nude body in a graphic pose so long as it keeps getting them traffic.
