I don't either. I don't watch either show but I can't figure out why Leno would quit one show only to take another one that's on an hour and half earlier. Sometimes there is a lot of spin in these moves. Was he really just pushed out of the late night slot by the network?

The deal was cut several years ago, so Leno really had no choice but to turn the Tonight Show over to Conan. Presumably he thought he'd be ready to retire by 2009, then changed his mind, so they came up with this bonehead plan instead.
