I was married in a courthouse a little over 21 years ago, and all I remember was signing in some ledger with my wife and the woman who conducted the ceremony.

Where I live, you can't just get married at the drop of a hat. Whether it's a religious ceremony or a civil one, you need a licence and the application fee is pricey. There's no way you could get married and not know it was real.
