    ^ I'll need that please.

I haven't been in this thread for a while and when I saw it was growing I said they're either fighting or have gone onto a tangent.

George was my fave Beatle. About five years ago when some of my friends kids were mid-teens they got into the Beatles by themselves. I was impressed and they loved that I could do Beatle trivia. They're parents were into the Grateful Dead, the Stones and now folk music (what do you call Patty Griffiths)?

I saw Wings at the Garden in 1976 - two nights in a row. I'm still proud of that. It was a spectacle, a happening. I will never forget Live and Let Die, I thought the Garden was going to blow up. We used to get such a kick out of Linda on the keyboards. We used to endlessly make fun of her and hoped she'd sing "Cook of the House". She'd raise her arm in the air and we'd all raise our arms. I grew to like her as time went on. She was a very good looking woman which I hadn't noticed till I was much older. I received her book "Linda's Pictures" as a gift when I was a kid (first edition) and I cherish it. Rock history, raw and real.

Linda didn't shave under her arms or her legs and we were always looking for closeup pictures to see the hair. We were such idiots!

Ohh The Rutles! Hard Day's Rut, Cheese & Onions.

I don't know about you boomers, but I sure had a helluva fun youth. All music and movies.

OMG! Witchcurlgirl! You must ask your dad, somehow obtain said lost Beatles album, then bring it here for us GR members enjoyment! The only thing I don't understand is if Yoko has blocked it, why? A power trip over the others? Or maybe she feels the quality isn't good enough for release?

Quality! What the hell would Yoko know about quality?
Oh, I offended you with my opinion? You should hear the ones I keep to myself.

Bahaha. And therein lies the reason so many of us hate her- zero talent but calls shots for the Beatles empire, often against the other member's wishes because she "knows better." My husband goes through something very similar with the family of his deceased best friend/lead singer, the father and the widow of this man (married for one week, btw!) constantly block votes by the remaining band members, put shit quality out there, etc.
    Its maddening, an its endless.

as i understand it she blocked it because since the beatles hadn't released the songs when they were recorded, she saw it as they didn't want them released. as none of the other members opposed her at that time it appears she was right. i don't see that as worthy of hate, but of respect. better to be like that than to release everything just to make a quick dollar, which neither she or the remaining beatles need. seems more like integrity to me. ymmv.

In some ways, I can't help but respect some of Yoko's decision regarding John/The Beatles legacy. I'm bothered by some of her personal life side actions- she fought hard to get her own daughter back but seemed to give Julian a great big fuck off. Not saying John was actively interested in being a father to Julian but based on what I've read, she wasn't helping that situation.

If the remaining band members are for it, then she absolutely made the right choice with this one.

I had also heard she sued fairly recently to stop some pro-intelligent design group to stop them from using Imagine in a movie they were doing, but she lost that one. Too bad, I hate fundie idiots like that

Oh man, "Imagine" was John's solo work... I don't understand how they ruled against Yoko when her (and possibly Sean and Julian) are the representatives of the estate. John's representatives should be able to call the shots with anything related to John's solo work and have some say in the Beatles stuff as well, its very frustrating that the courts would rule against them.

She signed John's stuff, including music and art, over to a licensing group back in 2014. She retained the personal right of refusal on licensed products. She lost the case against the filmmakers as it fails under the doctrine of fair use, as the song was being used for the purpose of criticism and commentary. The song was critiqued over it's message of religion. They're also only using a 15 second clip of the song, not Imagine in it's entirety.

The Beatles catalogue is owned by Sony and Michael Jackson's estate, 50% each.

I thought Paul bought it back from Michael a few years back?

Edited to add: My husband's band's catalogue is technically owned by BMG, though he and the other band members are the listed song writers. The remaining band members and the holders of the singer's estate are the ones that get to decide whether their songs are used where ever for licensing/publishing purposes and their manager is the one that brings them the opportunities. The then all vote yay or nay for usage and majority rules...

Jackson had no control over the Sony/ATV catalog for about the last ten years of his life, as he used it as collateral for loans with Sony and then couldn't pay the loans back due to his outrageous spending.

It's very complicated, but there are two main types of rights, publishing rights and recording rights. What Sony owns is the publishing, which means they can only give permission for artists to COVER the Beatles' songs, they have no control over the actual Beatles recordings. Especially as time goes on, it's the recordings that are increasing in value, and those are still owned by the Beatles/their estates themselves. That's why, for example, you can hear a cover of a Beatles song like "Blackbird" in an episode of ER but very, very rarely hear an actual Beatles recording used on a TV show. The first scripted show to get the rights to play a Beatles song was Mad Men, who two years ago got permission to play "Tomorrow Never Knows" in the episode "Lady Lazarus."

Paul McCartney will never buy the publishing rights to catalogue back as, starting three years from now, the publishing rights will start to revert back to him under the Copyright Law of 1976, which dictates any song rights prior to 1978 revert back to the original composers (or their heirs) after 56 years. So far, McCartney's in excellent health, and if he lives ten more years all the songs in the catalogue will be covered in the 56 year time frame and revert back to him. If he passes before then, the rights will go to his heirs.
