Brian Wilson was/is a genius but like so many others he fucked up his brain with drugs. He seems to be more stable these days but the voice has gone. Fave Beach Boys song = Warmth Of The Sun, allegedly written in the aftermath of JFK's assassination.

Mama Cass Elliot had a unique and utterly distinctive voice that dominated the rest of the group. Sad woman who was desperately in love with Denny but he didn't reciprocate because he was besotted by the hot chick Michelle Phillips.

From what I've read, Brian had known issues long before he got into drugs. His father was a real piece of shit. I think, partly, the drugs were his attempt to self medicate and escape. He's been diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder.

ETA: This is a really interesting article he gave http://www.abilitymagazine.com/past/brianW/brianw.html

"God Only Knows" is my favorite Beach Boys song, too.

I would also like to mention that Elton John, David Bowie, and Peter Schilling were not astronauts, but sang songs about rockets, those poseurs!

Their personal lives are pretty interesting though, and by interesting I mean completely fucked up- like Dennis was briefly married to and had a child by his cousin Mike Love's daughter
I was utterly shocked, shocked I tells ya, when I read about the Beach Boys not being surfers... I felt personally betrayed, lol, I guess the way the Beach Boys came about was a lot like how the Jackson 5 came about, the dad was pretty abusive and basically forced them to do this hormonic band from an early age, putting it together with a "catch," being the surfer/hot rods theme.
It is a trip, the link between the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Charles Manson. It sickens me to picture Manson sitting in his cell, patting himself on the back because these two great bands know his name personally.

This thread has me on YouTube watching all my old faves. My dad's contributions was "Don't Worry Baby". I forgot how much I loved that sing.

"Don't Worry Baby" might actually be my favorite over "God Only Knows", though I walked down the aisle to that song.

I didn't realise Don't Worry Baby is about a car race until I listened to the lyrics properly. In My Room is pretty good too.

To bring it back to the culturally irrelevant Paul... he's said "God Only Knows" is his favorite song of all time.

And fun fact- Brian Wilson isn't the only crazy playing on God Only Knows....one of the percussionists was Jim Gordon, one of the best session drummers of his era, and a schizophrenic who later murdered his mother he played with everybody who was anybody for many years.

Also they wrote, Here There and Everywhere immediately after hearing it and Paul believes God Only Knows was a huge influence on it.

All this Beatles talk reminded me of something I haven't thought about in a long time. I don't usually tell personal stories here but here goes:

My father's 2 closest industry friends were a man named Roy Cicala , who was the engineer on all Lennon's solo stuff from Imagine on, but had worked with him before that, and another industry guy named John Hanti. Back in the mid 80's one of hanti's former employees was arrested by the FBI for stealing a master tape that is considered a 'lost' Beatles album from Hanti's studio. It was going to be released in the early 80's, but it was (and is still) blocked by Yoko. It's some songs from about c67-70, and loads of conversations from the studio sessions. I wonder where it is now, I'm going to have to ask hanti or my dad.
