Another 'trend' is handing out university doctorates to celebrities. I've never understood that. Does anyone know what the purpose of that is? I remember vaguely reading about Billy Connolly (how I love that man) in a book written by his wife (ex commedienne who is now a qualified psychologist). She was pissed that he was handed this doctorate for no apparent reason, yet she had to study hard for years for hers. Is it done to promote the university?

Actually, I think that sometimes it is meant to promote a particular university. Most universities who hand out honorary doctorates would defend themselves by saying that they are just trying to show appreciation to an "artist" for their years of hard work. It's funny how they never give out doctorates to "artists" who are not famous, but who have worked as hard or harder.

There are lots of ways to make people give a damn. I mean, I knew about Darfur before Clooney opened his overrated mouth and I'm sure other people did too. He doesn't deserve an award. None of these stupid celebs do. They award themselves constantly. We need to stop with the celebrity ego-stroking and start recognizing real people who actually make a difference and don't just show up places for photo ops.

I'm on the same page as you. We also need to quit letting them break the law (ahem, Hollywood whores!).

Besides, Clooney just seems like...a douchebag.
