Sorry for quoting myself, but he *is* actually claiming that 'a friend' brought the cake, the box cutter party favours and made the box cutter place cards as 'a joke'.
The Guy from Devo Is Sorry About His Twin Towers-Shaped Wedding Cake, Which He Says Was a 'Set-Up'

He also said it ruined his wedding, poor baby. I just have a real hard time imagining the guy from Devo leaving his wedding planning to a friend with questionable taste. Surely they'd use a professional party planner. But apparently there's a 'real' explanation:

I can't imagine what they were thinking - especially with 'funny faces' on the Twin Towers.

I think it's morbid but I'm gonna take Sput's advice and unclench.

It was at a restaurant with a small group of friends. I bet not much "planning" went into it.

I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt about the cake. I am, however, going to point and laugh at the old man marrying a 26 year old superfan. Stalking pays off, kids!

See, I think Faithanne's right--that old man marrying his 26-year-old superfan is more worthy of outrage. WTF is he thinking?

I just can't get that worked up over a bad taste wedding, even this. I seriously doubt this guy and his teen bride truly, literally think the 9/11 tragedy is funny.

I have said and done so many--so many--OFFENSIVE things that would provoke the same outrage if done outside my small circle of friends. If a passerby happens to hear it and be appalled, I know they don't get it and I don't really care because they should also mind their own business. Context is everything.

I mean, it's Devo. They're quirky and irreverent to the extreme, and also extremely awkward in their natural state of being. Musicians have sick senses of humor and love to mock all things traditional- marriage being a prime example. Was the theme tasteless? Sure. But what isn't that this group is involved in. The irony is that Jerry probably honestly didn't mean anything offensive by this, it was probably his awkward way of saying "oh shit, I'm getting married on 9/11, that's uncomfortable. I'll make a big joke of it before anyone else has the chance to."

I can't imagine linking the horrible-ness of 9/11 with what is supposed to be a happy occasion. Having listened to so many survivor stories, I would never want that terror and tragedy anywhere near being linked to my marriage.

But then, I'm also not an old pop star who decided to get hitched a crazy-eyed stalker of my band.

Personally if someone had pulled a stunt like that at my wedding I would have demanded that shit was out of there, swiftly followed by the person who set it up. I wouldn't have stood about and posed for smiley pictures.

I didn't lose anyone in 9/11 but I did have a real life friend from college who was over in NYC at the time and I still remember trying to get e-mail after e-mail out to them to try and find out if they were ok and the mail server just refusing to do anything. Thankfully my friend was alright but I know that what I felt for those two days of waiting and trying is a fucking speck of dust in the cosmos compared to what it was like for people who had loved ones that they knew were in the immediate vicinity or on a flight that day.

As I said, I didn't lose anyone but I remember every. single. fucking. moment, from when my then-manager came down to my little cubbyhole office to tell me what they'd just heard on the radio upstairs, to realising that L could have been caught up in it, to the fat fingers that couldn't seem to type anything right and the e-mails bouncing back over and over. I cannot imagine what it was like for others who's situation turned out much worse than mine.

Wait, what, she's 26? A 26 year shouldn't even know who DEVO are!

As the screaming brides on Bridezilla used to say, "It's MY DAY!" The child bride will have to live with these images as her memories of her first wedding because I'm sure that she'll have more than one special day since the groom is probably older than her father. Don't choke on the cake.
