I saw him live a couple of times, one of them was truly an absolutely brilliant concert. In my Top 10 of all time. RIP, Sir. You will be greatly missed.

*sigh* feeling pretty old right now, pulled out the old vinyl when I heard the news. The Jean Genie was the first song I remember but I was too young to really appreciate it, took a few more years for that. Rebel Rebel first foremost and always but even when he transitioned to the big suit Bowie, Golden Years...he was still the coolest. I was lucky to see him then, in the Young Americans days and again on the Serious Moonlight tour.

I also listened to Man who Sold the World, another favorite although I have to admit I prefer Nirvana's version. Also loved Mott the Hoople's version of All the Young Dudes.

The more I read, the sadder I feel. I first learned of David Bowie through the Labyrinth when I was a kid. I had the biggest crush on that Goblin King! After that first viewing I asked my Mom who this gorgeous man was...She swooned and broke out her vinyls and had me listen to the real David Bowie! He was always one of her faves. I called her this morning to check up because I knew she'd be heartbroken and she was.

We always talk about which deaths of our "generation" will shock us and this has got to be a big one. He wasn't even on my radar. I love that he was able to go out in his own way. The way a true legend should...

    RIP

Here's the other video he released, another part to his farewell from his last album. It's incredibly sad, but also poignant. It does make you think of your own mortality and how amazing he is was an artist to be able to use his death as a medium.

one of my strange claims to fame

i worked at Sea World in the late 70's and David Bowie came into my gift shop. he bought a giant 200 dollar stuffed Shamu for his son. He signed the credit card receipt, and i kept the copy.

I went to a brilliantly kick-arse party for some friends of ours and the husband, a very talented singer and musician, did a whole set of Bowie songs with another singer friend of ours backing him. It was bloody memorable as fuck, not least for when my other half got up on stage singing as well.

    And I absolutely love you...

i see vimeo is not supported which is a shame. See this video if you haven't, it's really worth it. It's Space Oddity illustrated as a children's book:

    It's very well done.

I'm watching the final Ziggy Stardust show at the Hammersmith. This was when I loved him most. I remember as a kid being so jealous of my teenage sister going off to see David Bowie in her corduroy flairs and satin jacket.

I'm going to look on the bright side and welcome the bombardment of Bowie we're about to experience. I'd be happy for all Bowie, all the time.
