Domestic disturbances are not always what they seem. It's possible that his mother and sister instigated a fight and provoked him to the point of him losing his cool. It's possible he's just a jerk. I don't know anything, and I won't make any judgments yet.

Also, there are laws that someone has to be arrested in domestic disturbances--in my state, and in others, someone has to be taken into custody, period.

Batman star Christian Bale was freed after being held for more than four hours by police investigating claims of assault.

Scotland Yard said the British Hollywood star was released on bail to a date in September pending further inquiries.

The 34-year-old actor was arrested at Belgravia police station, in central London, earlier on Tuesday after attending by appointment.

Bale was spirited away from the station in a silver Mercedes people carrier. A steadily growing pack of photographers, cameramen and reporters had been waiting outside since his arrival shortly before noon.

Officers are investigating claims that Bale lashed out at his mother and sister in his suite at Park Lane's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday.

His sister Sharon, 40, shouted "it's a family matter" through a window when approached by reporters at her home in Corfe Mullen, near Wimborne, Dorset. A man who answered the door at the home of his mother Jenny, 61, in Bournemouth, said she did not want to comment.

Bale was arrested hours after he attended the first European screening of the new Batman blockbuster, The Dark Knight. Accompanied by his wife, Sibi, the actor joined co-stars Sir Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart at the Odeon West End cinema in Leicester Square.

It is understood officers approached Bale's representatives and agreed to speak to the actor about the claims after the high-profile premiere.

The two women went to a Hampshire police station on Monday to make a formal allegation. The complaint about the actor was then passed to the Metropolitan Police for further investigation.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman confirmed a 34-year-old was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. She said: "A man has been bailed to return on a date in September pending further inquiries."

I don't know....not really buying this. Maybe he did, but I highly doubt it, I don't know why people are so quickly to jump to him being "guilty"..maybe he didn't do it, there is always that possibility.

Usually with big stars like this for whatever reason...there is always some greedy person/s wanting some sort of money...I can believe they probably wanted money, he wouldn't give it to them, so now we've been assaulted. It's possible that happened, and it's also possible he could have assaulted him.

Or maybe it just went down like this, "Christian, we want some money, you are a huge star now, Batman's going to make so much money..blah blah...you owe us..blah blah".

I am not going to accuse the guy of something we don't know of he did..that just seems a little wrong.

If he indeed has an anger management problem there could very well be some violence at home with his wife. His publicist has some major spinwork to do.

In my state all you have to do is take out this charge and the person is arrested anyway. I could call right now and say my husband beat me and they will take him in to custody, guilty or not.

In the UK, it affords you certain right (i.e. to have the interview taped, to have a solicitor there, etc). I believe that it's all bound up in PACE and various criminal acts.

I can well believe that mother and sister instigated something. With all the hoopla surrounding the Dark Knight premier, who knows; maybe they got worked up and carried away, then decided to create a little drama of their own. Anyone who hollers out the window "It's a family matter" at waiting paparazzi sounds like she knows a thing or two about creating drama, or at least making a scene.

My gut tells me that it wasn't about money, but the sheer gleeful excitement of shit disturbing.
