Thin people get sleep apnea, too. Obesity is one cause of it, but there are thin people who get it. My brother in law for one, he's a thin guy who has it pretty bad.

People with OSA will fall sleep anywhere, any time. Over here OSA is one of the conditions you have to notify the DVLA about due to the risk of falling asleep at the wheel if you don't stick to the treatment, and your specialist doctor will not hesitate to report you to them if you let your compliance drop below acceptable levels. Untreated OSA also carries a greatly increased risk of of heart attacks, strokes and other serious and potentially deadly conditions.

I really get pissed with the people who try the treatment once or twice and then give it up because it's a hassle having to sleep with a mask on. If you want to fuck up your own health then go for it, your choice etc, but what about the people who could die or be seriously injured because you have caused a car smash or a fire because of falling asleep the second you get comfortable? Bloke has OSA and yes, the mask was a pain in the arse to get used to at first and it took a few tries to find one that fit best for him (full face rather than nose only), and yeah, it does wake you up occasionally when it slips and starts blasting cold air into your eye or makes incredibly loud comedy fart noises, but the gains in energy, appetite and overall well being make it worth persisting with.

Bloke was at his ideal weight when he was diagnosed. We think that he has had it (to a lesser degree) since he was a kid as he has always snored like a bulldozer and has always experienced horrible night terrors, both of which have significantly improved since he went onto a CPap. Makes me wonder whether the night terrors might partially have been his brain's way of making him wake up because he wasn't getting enough oxygen.

Yes, you are correct. I recall one of the attorneys I worked for back in the 90s - he had it and his wife threatened to divorce him because of the snoring. He got an outpatient procedure done - they used a laser to remove part of his uvula (the flappy flesh between your nose and throat). He said that it was extremely painful, but he ate loads of gelato on his doctor's orders.

I know someone that has a mask for sleep apnea. He said it's the best sleep he's ever had in his life.

According to this article, "sleep apnea" was basically listed as the cause because the family would not give permission for a full autopsy and based on her assistant who was with her (and said Carrie fell asleep on the plane and had her "normal" apnea, then fell asleep again and didn't wake up). Tox screen showed Carrie had heroin, methadone, cocaine, Oxy, ecstasy, Prozac, Abilify and Lamictal in her system. But the coroner can't determine what drugs did what to her without a full examination, so the drugs are listed as a "secondary cause." However it seems Carrie did coke shortly before getting on the plane and the heroin and methadone probably finished her off by depressing her breathing when she had a heart attack due to the other drugs.

The CPAP didn't help me - I still woke up at the same time every night. I do have a mouthpiece that I use - had it specially made to fit my mouth. It's not the most comfortable thing, but it helps. I'll admit I don't use it every day. I've been getting better at sleeping the night through. Sometimes I wake up and fall back asleep an hour later. Definitely feel more rested.

I always thought that ecstasy had one and heroin in its mixture. Could she test positive for coke and heroin if she didn't do any, but just ecstasy.
