I don't think he's any different from some of the other journalists; he just got caught.

From near-Peter Jennings status to lower than Geraldo Rivera - sad.

That is my suspicion, too. At the risk of sounding old-farty, TV journalists these days are too fond of inserting themselves into the story and making it about them as much as possible. I imagine some of it stems from efforts to 'personalize' the news because they don't think Americans will pay attention otherwise. It's one reason I stopped watching TV news a couple of decades ago.

Lester Holt has officially been named the new anchor of NBC Nightly News.

The network announced his new appointment in a press release this afternoon that also revealed that Brian Williams had accepted a job at MSNBC.

Williams also broke his silence for the first time, apologizing for the controversy that erupted earlier this year when it was revealed he had exaggerated stories while also showing his support for Holt.

'I’m sorry. I said things that weren’t true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and I’m determined to earn back their trust. I will greatly miss working with the team on Nightly News, but I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor,' said Williams.

'I will support him 100 percent as he has always supported me. I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it.'

Holt also celebrated his new appointment in the release, saying: 'This is an enormous honor. The respect and admiration I have for the Nightly News team has only grown deeper over the last several months that we've been together.
'Day-in and day-out under an uncomfortable spotlight they have produced world-class journalism. I’m very proud and grateful to be part of such an unflappable and dedicated team of professionals as we move forward together.'
Holt also tweeted after the announcement: 'Promised my family I wouldn't think about work during vacation. Just got the ok to break that promise. Excited and grateful for new role.'
The network's news director Andrew Lack also applauded Holt, who has been a television news reporter for 34 years and a member of the NBC team since 2000.
'Lester has done outstanding work for NBC News over the last 10 years, and he’s performed remarkably well over the last few months under very tough circumstances,' said Lack.
'He’s an exceptional anchor who goes straight to the heart of every story and is always able to find its most direct connection to the everyday lives of our audience. In many ways, television news stands at a crossroads, and Lester is the perfect person to meet the moment.'
He will be the first solo black anchor of a major network newscast.
Despite the big promotion however, an NBC executive told the New York Times that Holt would be making 'substantially' less money than Williams, who was taking home $10million a year.

Williams was taken off the air in February after he retold an old war story about being in a helicopter struck by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) in Iraq in 2003

This comes as Williams is set to give an interview with Today host Matt Lauer that was taped earlier this week and will air on Friday.
Part of the interview will also air Friday evening on Nightly News.
Just weeks ago it was reported that senior executives at NBC News had been asked to brainstorm alternative roles for Williams, despite reports that some in the organization want him fired.
NBC News chairman Andy Lack, an ally of the anchor, had reportedly asked employees to 'think creatively' about a new role for Williams.
Williams was taken off the air in February after he retold an old war story about being in a helicopter struck by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) in Iraq in 2003.
It then emerged that Williams hadn't been on the heicopter and despite an on-air apology he was taken off the air.

Williams had previously been the most-watched nightly news anchor and just last year he had signed a highly lucrative contract reportedly worth about $10million a year for five years.
In April an NBC News inquiry found Williams had exaggerated his reporting on a total of 11 occasions including in his award-winning reporting of Hurricane Katrina.
The inquiry was reportedly leaked to the press by someone within NBC News in the hope that it might force Williams to resign, he didn't.
'It's been Brian's position all along that he will not resign. If he leaves it will not be his decision,' a source told the New York Daily News.
If the network was to sack Williams it would likely have to pay a significant portion of his contract - as much as $30million - in return for not speaking publicly about the network.
The leak was believed to anger Lack, who is also a friend of Williams.
'Andy believes viewers want him (Williams) back.
'The feeling is that (Williams') problem seems to be more with the media and other reporters than his viewers - if Andy can figure out a way to get him back on the air he will do it.,' a source told the Daily News.

Can't help it, I still like Brian and I hope he does well in his new assignment. Hopefully, he's learned a difficult lesson and can win back viewership with people. Having said that, I really Lester as well and am thrilled he's going to be the anchor.

Awesome for Lester. His hiring is a huge deal for him and other minority anchors. I'm shocked that there has never been a black solo news anchor for a major network before. Glad to see talented people of all races getting a shot at the big time.

I heart Lester; always have, and knew Williams wouldn't continue. Was so hoping after the suspension that Lester would get the job.

I grew up watching Lester in Chicago and always loved him. I can still remember his last broadcast. This is great news!

Regarding Hurricane Katrina, I read it was about him claiming on air to have seen bodies floating by in the flood waters, which wasn't true.
