I didn't know she smoked either. I thought that when she got with Brad that I read that she wanted him to quite smoking.

They both smoke, or did at the end of last year (photos are out there). And I don't judge anyone for it, but it does seem like some sort of logical disconnect to undertake surgeries like she has yet not quite smoking. You may not have to tell your kids that 'mommy died from ovarian cancer', but lung/jaw/tongue cancer instead.

but then again, it's hard on me to crap on her for smoking since some of us (ok, many of us) suspect she is doing harder stuff ....

Yes..but I see what they mean. When you are trying so hard to avoid cancer specifically it does seem silly to still be doing something that is a big cause of certain cancers.

I totally get what people are saying about the inconsistency between undergoing major surgery to address genetic risks of cancer but still engaging in voluntary activity (smoking) which also causes cancer...

I'm a low level smoker and come from a family rife with cancer deaths. The way I look at it: if I cark it of lung cancer, I've brought it on myself. But if my dodgy genetic predisposition kills me through bowel cancer, that's a bit shit. (heh. pun not intended.)

Maybe Jolie's the same? Take responsibility for the things you can control.

I can, but that still doesn't mean it's a bad decision.

I pretty much did similar. I had kidney cancer, unresponsive to chemo or radiation. Had half a kidney removed. Two years later, had a fibroid and twisted fallopian. I told doc to take it all out, cervix included, which cervix had tumors we didn't know about. Now, I'm just hot all the time lol...

Aside from the health aspects, I'm surprised that a woman known for her beauty smokes in this day and age. Nothing steals beauty and ages a person like smoking does.

As an example, I think the major reason Melanie Griffith looks as awful as she does is because of her smoking. Smoking has ruined the looks of a lot of people in Hollywood. I would've thought Angelina was smarter than that.

^^ I just saw the article on line showing identical twins, side by side, where one had smoked though life and the other had not. What a MAJOR difference this it.

She's not looking to lead a healthy lifestyle, she just doesn't want to die from something that is almost a guarantee based on her family history. Most smokers do not get lung cancer, she's taking her chances. And it keeps her thin!!

I think just for the first one, her sun damage makes it much worse, that's why they put her first. The rest of them seem to have the same amount of sun damage and the difference is more subtle, but definitely there, I was able to guess correctly on every one, it wasn't hard to do. Very interesting.

If quitting smoking had to do with nothing more than logical thinking, there would be no smokers. It is a great deal more complicated than that. It is a bastard to stop, and all the will power in the world just doesn't work in many cases.
