Fraternal twins = two separate eggs fertilized by two separate sperm.

It can happen naturally if the woman releases more than one egg (daddy always releases zillions of swimmers) but it's common with IVF or fertility drugs because they often implant more than one embryo and/or the drugs make the ovaries produce more eggs. Fraternal twins are effectively two different babies who happen to develop at the same time in the same womb. That's why you can get fraternal male/female twins.

Identical twins = one egg is fertilized by one sperm and for some reason the egg then divides into two embryos which will have identical DNA and of course they will be the same sex. I don't think even the most advanced IVF docs have figured out how to do this in a petri dish yet.

Spot on. With IVF/Assisted Hatching and ICSI, maternal twins are more common since there is actual needle penetration into the embryo. I know of a woman who did IVF, transfered three embryos w/ ICSI, and is now expecting Quads! One of the eggs split so she has a set of identical twins and a set of fraternal twins. With IVF, the standard is to transfer three embryos, sometimes more or less depending on the individual woman's health history.

Eh...I know I'm in the minority, but I wish them well. They can take care of the kids, and the kids always seem really happy, so I can't begrudge them that. There are so many parents out of the spotlight that I think are way worse for kids than these two.
