One is VERY amused: Adele gets the giggles as she accepts her MBE from Prince Charles

There is a time and place for a fit of the giggles - but receiving an MBE from the future King of England probably isn't one of them.

The Someone Like You singer looked picture perfect as she collected her MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on Thursday in a 945 Stella McCartney midnight blue prom dress.

But the multi-million selling star failed to retain her composure, collapse into laughter as Prince Charles bestowed her with the honour.

Delicate operation: Prince Charles tried to keep a steady hand as he pins the honour on Adele's stunning Stella McCartney dress

Giggles: Adele appeared to have a severe case of the giggles as she walked away after meeting Prince Charles

What did they chat about? The royal was seen chatting to Adele for several minutes after pinning on the award

Stood before him in Buckingham Palace, the Chasing Pavements star could be seen battling with her inappropriate compulsion to laugh.

Although she successfully completed the ceremony without any embarrassment, she could be seen guffawing as she walked away from the future monarch.

Rolling her head back and laughing hearitly, the star was clearly overcome with emotion with the honour.

Best of British: Miss Adele Adkins MBE holds her honour aloft at Buckingham Palace on Thursday

Very posh affair: Adele was thrilled with her trip to the palace and declared it 'a very posh affair'

The 25-year-old looked stylish but suitably dressed in her long-sleeved full-skirted dress, featuring green metallic accents, which nipped her in at the waist.

She nailed it: The star wore a crown nail jewel on her left hand to celebrate the occasion

However, Adele wore her strawberry blonde hair up in a vintage look beehive, accessorised with a Philip Treacy veiled headband.

A source told MailOnline Adele used Beauty Works GOLD Weft extensions to create the voluminous updo.

Clearly delighted with the honour, Adele beamed from ear to ear curtseying before Prince Charles pinned the medal to her chest, and shaking his hand.

Charles was then seen chatting to Adele for several minutes, presumably congratulating her on her immense musical success.

Speaking after the presentation, Adele said her visit to Buckingham Palace to receive her MBE was a 'very posh' affair.

The singer said: 'It was an honour to be recognised and a very proud moment to be awarded alongside such wonderful and inspirational people. Very posh indeed.'

Sleek: Adele pulled out all the stops for her moment at the palace, opting for a Stella McCartney midi gown, and a Phillip Treacy headpiece

Sticking to black: Adele looked chic as she collected her MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on Thursday

The Oscar-winning singer who found fame after a friend posted her demo on MySpace in 2006, already has a bulging trophy cabinet, from Brit Awards to Grammys, and was honoured for services to the music industry.

Personal and professional success: Adele has a son with partner Simon Konecki, with whom she attended the Lady Gaga concert earlier this month

Also honoured was Christian Horner, the team principal of the Red Bull Formula One team which has won four consecutive constructors' and drivers' world championships. He was awarded an OBE for services to motorsport.

Margaret Thatcher's former private secretary Edward Leigh followed in his father's footsteps when he was knighted by the prince.

Paralympians Josie Pearson and Aled Davies, who both won gold in the discus during London 2012, were also awarded MBEs.

Adele - whose full name is Adele Laurie Blue Adkins - was born when her mother was 18, to a father she says she never knew.
From an early age she wanted to sing and her mother regularly arranged the lamps in her house to form a spotlight so Adele could perform to family and friends.

She was offered a recording contract with XL Recordings after her friend posted the demos on MySpace soon after she graduated from the performing arts Brits School in Croydon in 2006.

Her debut album 19, also inspired by heartache, went straight in at number one following its release in 2008.

She had already been tipped for success after becoming the first winner of the new Critics' Choice Award at the Brits.
Meet and greet: Adele beamed from ear-to-ear as she shook Prince Charles' hand

Her success went stratospheric after a spine-tingling performance of her single Someone Like You at the 2011 Brit Awards, which became the launchpad for 21.

Adele also enjoyed the longest run ever by a woman at the top of the UK album charts, surpassing Madonna, and she became the first woman to have two singles and two albums in the UK top five at the same time.

She appears to have bounced back from her medical woes in late 2011 when her throat problems - which had threatened to wreck her singing voice permanently - forced her to cancel a string of concerts.

Adele - who won a record six Grammy Awards in the US last year - has said she will never write another break-up record as she is 'done being a bitter witch'.

She has largely kept out of the limelight since becoming a mother, with appearances at awards events seemingly her chief reason for heading out after-hours these days.

Bulging awards cabinet: The MBE is the latest in a string of awards for Adele, who won an Oscar for James Bond theme Skyfall back in February
