Sir Paul McCartney’s new girlfriend Nancy Shevell is now divorced from her husband... leaving her free to marry the music legend.

Her divorce from wealthy lawyer Bruce Blakeman was made final last month.

And we can reveal that Sir Paul has told friends he now plans to wed US haulage heiress Nancy, saying: “We are blissfully happy together.”

Crucially, Sir Paul has the blessing of daughter Stella, who was a fierce opponent of his disastrous and costly second marriage to Heather Mills.

Friends say the top fashion designer would be delighted to welcome Nancy into the family.

“Getting Stella’s seal of approval was very important for Paul,” a well-placed McCartney insider said yesterday. All Paul’s children had massive reservations about Heather – but it was Stella who was the most vociferous.”

Nancy’s divorce was signed on December 2 and made final on December 9 in the US Supreme Court of the State of New York.

The couple divorced in the most amicable way under the city’s laws – after being legally separated for a year and 60 days.

Nancy, 49, has grown so close to Stella that she buys Christmas and birthday presents for her children.

Significantly, Sir Paul, 66, has sought the approval of the family of his adored first wife Linda, who died in 1998. Ten days ago, Linda’s brother John Eastman joined Sir Paul and Nancy for a very public lunch in Manhattan celebrity haunt Michael’s.

A friend said: “Linda remains paramount in Paul’s thoughts and always will, so it will matter enormously to him to have the Eastman family’s support.”

Nancy, who has a 17-year-old son from her first marriage, spent Christmas in the UK with Paul, dividing her time between his Peasmarch Estate near Rye in East Sussex and his mansion in London’s St John’s Wood.

The couple, who have just returned from a holiday in Mexico, are expected to make a joint appearance in Edinburgh on Tuesday at the opening of a photo exhibition by Paul’s brother Mike.

Nancy, a regular at the Stella McCartney store in New York, has also been spending a lot of time with Paul’s daughter Beatrice, five.

The friend added: “Unlike Heather, Nancy is a multi-millionaire in her own right and therefore could never be portrayed as being interested in Sir Paul for his money. She is calm, measured and mature, whereas Heather is fiery and impulsive.

“Nancy and Sir Paul are totally natural together and feel blessed to have found happiness together.

“Nancy is funny, bright, loving, warm and open. Stella has told friends that Nancy would make an ideal stepmother.”

Sir Paul has known Nancy socially for more than 30 years. His children have known her affectionately as “Lady O” because she often wears Jackie Onassis-style sunglasses.

Sir Paul and Linda were friends of Nancy and her ex Bruce on the dinner-party circuit in the exclusive US East Coast holiday retreat of The Hamptons, Long Island. The families developed a closer bond when Nancy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, a year after Linda.

Maccas’s friends and family view Nancy as much closer in spirit to Linda than former model Heather, whose murky past caused Sir Paul huge embarrassment before to their £24million divorce.

The source added: “Nancy has been through a lot – not least overcoming breast cancer. She also comes from a similar wealthy East Coast background to Linda. They shared a similar outlook on life. She joined the family firm in the 1980s and has become wealthy in her own right. It makes everyone comfortable that she is clearly not after Paul’s money.

“It suits Paul that she is also discreet and, unlike Heather, does not court publicity.”

Nancy has even reportedly toned down her right-wing Republican views to align herself more with Sir Paul’s liberal political outlook. She has also swapped her favourite steaks for veggie dishes in deference to his long-standing refusal to eat meat.

The friend said: “Paul is a big believer in the institution of marriage, and his friends are in absolutely no doubt he will propose to Nancy in time.

“Her divorce has been hanging over them – with all the baggage from the past that it represents. So it feels like a great relief to have it all sorted.”

Nancy, whose family freight business is worth around £250million, legally separated from Bruce in November 2007 after 23 years.

Nancy and Paul were first romantically linked soon afterwards when they were pictured kissing in a car in East Hampton, where they both have houses. At the time, Macca was embroiled in his bitter divorce from Heather. Bruce, a leading lawyer who remains on good terms with Nancy, is understood to be pleased she has found a new partner.

Last August they drove across America in a 1989 Ford Bronco, following the old Route 66, the legendary route to the West, staying in motels and hotels on the way.

The friend said: “The road trip was when they realised quite how much they loved each other. They’ve both got loads of money but they were at their happiest just driving together in an old car staying in motels.

“Paul is basically a very down-to-earth guy and he was blown away to discover that Nancy is also very chilled and relaxed.

“Now everything is in place for Paul and Nancy to make their lives together – with the approval of both of their families.”

They've been dating over a year actually; since November '07 at least.

If they want to get married, go for it. She's actually an excellent match: independently wealthy, closer to his age, and unlike Millsy not a famewhore at all.

Some men have a hard time being alone, they do best in a relationship. I have seen some hook up with someone new less than a week after moving out of anothers house. If they have been dating a year, then that is enough time to shack up, but why keep marrying, especially if they are not going to have children.

Exactly what I thought after I read the article.

If he is happy, why not continue on the way he is with Nancy?

Mr. Pippin and I have lived together for 22 years and are happy, and never married. Neither of us has been married. We don't have children together, so what the feck is the point of getting married?

I'm a bit superstitious, and have it in my head that if we married, the almighty sword of doom would come up from hell and ruin what we have.

We discussed marriage, of course. We agreed that we'd get married if it was of financial benefit to us when we are older and collecting our pensions. I know, I am not very romantic....

If Sir Paul marries his Nancy and it does not work out, then he has no one to blame but himself. I'm disappointed in him. I thought he might have learned his lesson after his unfortunate liaison with that one-legged gold digger.
