Default Seal: Heidi Klum delivered a bombshell a month into our relationship

Something peculiar happened to Seal one night as he and his supermodel wife Heidi Klum were driving home to Los Angeles through the Napa Valley.
An old Sixties hit, Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come, came on the car stereo, and Seal was so moved he had to pull over to the roadside to gather his thoughts.
'I must have heard that song a thousand times, but it broke my heart,' he recalls. 'It brought tears to my eyes. It was written 40 years ago, but its message seemed every bit as profound now.
'It struck me right then that A Change Is Gonna Come could speak for a new generation. With today's breakdown in family and social values, I felt that it was a song I simply had to sing.'

Singing his heart out: Seal at the Empire

Energised by the experience, Seal phoned his friend David Foster, the producer behind many of Whitney Houston's hits, and set about putting his stamp on the Cooke classic - a poignant anthem of the civil rights movement in the Sixties.
For 45-year-old Seal, it was a dramatic departure from the slick dance music that had helped him to sell 15 million albums since he first tasted success with Crazy and Killer in the early Nineties.
But even though he had only recently returned to his clubland roots with last year's System LP, Seal suddenly found himself veering off on a totally unexpected path. With Foster's expert guidance, his next move 'We did A Change Is Gonna Come in David's house in Santa Monica, and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

'We finished the whole track in two days,' says Seal, who was born in Paddington, West London. 'I didn't set out to make an album in a similar vein, but David convinced me that I was made to sing this music. I'm not sure whether that's true, but it was an incredible compliment.'
The resulting album, Soul, out on November 10, gives Seal an opportunity to remind us all of his rich, powerful voice. There aren't many British singers who can tackle such songs as Al Green's Here I Am and Otis Redding's I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now), but Seal carries off the task with aplomb. Foster's string arrangements provide a sumptuous backdrop.

Model marriage: Seal and his supermodel wife Heidi Klum last year
Talking about the new record over lunch in London, the imposing singer (he's 6ft 4in) mulls over my questions before giving
    considered, precise answers.

Soul music, he says, has always been part of his 'musical DNA'. He adds that the timeless tunes of Cooke, Redding and James Brown gave him solace during a difficult childhood, in which he was shunted between his mother, a father prone to violence and loving foster-parents in Essex.
'I grew up hearing soul records on the radio. My mother was always playing Motown, so I developed an affinity for them.
'But when I walked up to the microphone to sing them, I wondered whether I'd bitten off more than I could chew. Fortunately, the songs are so amazing that we didn't have to reinvent the wheel. We just concentrated on coming up with good arrangements.'
Seal (born Sealhenry Olumide Samuel) admits his tough upbringing had a huge bearing on him. From the day he first performed as a shy schoolboy - singing Johnny Nash's I Can See Clearly Now - he saw the stage as a place of refuge.
'Music was my escape,' he says. 'I remember being petrified the first time I sang. I closed my eyes, sang, and everyone clapped afterwards. That gave me such a buzz that my fears melted away. From then on, I kept coming back.'
On a more positive note, Seal also takes inspiration from his life in LA with Klum.
The couple have two young sons - Henry, three, and 23-month-old Johan - while Seal is stepfather to four-year-old Leni, Heidi's daughter by motor racing tycoon Flavio Briatore.
Seal and German-born Klum met five years ago at the GQ Awards in London, although their relationship didn't begin until a chance encounter in New York weeks later.
'I was taken aback when I met her,' says Seal. 'I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I'd seen. I thought: "Wow! Whoever goes out with that girl is one lucky guy!"
'A month into our relationship, she told me she was pregnant, but was no longer with the father. I told her it didn't change the way I felt about her.
'Apart from being my wife, she's also my best friend.'
Though he hasn't had a major hit since 1994's Grammy-winning Kiss From A Rose, one of the most played singles in American radio history, Seal has justifiably high hopes that Soul will put his career back on track.
Suspicions that his days in the California sunshine were blunting his creative edge were dispelled by last year's System, an invigorating collaboration with Madonna's British producer Stuart Price. Now his resurgence continues.
'Singing these great songs has been an education for me,' he says. 'The likes of Sam Cooke and Otis Redding were able to come up with a simple, one-line sentiment that could resonate with everyone.
But beyond that, this record has reminded me I'm an entertainer. If people like my music, it's because they like my voice, and this album is a step in the right direction.'

I like these two as a couple. Everything just seems SO perfect for them though, so naturally being the annoying cynic I am, I am abit ... ehhh about them too.

I do believe they are the most in love of all couples. They will outlast the rest,IMO.

The fact Seal accepted Heidi pregnant speaks volumes. He stood by her in what must've been a stressful time in her life (having just broken up with her daughter's father). That man's got to have a heart of gold and I have no doubt these two love each other a lot.

Word - as a couple, their energy is unreal.
"I ransacked his drawers when he left me by myself at his place for the first time. That's how we did it in the good old days. Tells me all I need to know about him. He pretends he didn't notice. That's how good relationships start." - Chilly Willy

Yea, it always blew me away that he would not only date, but marry a woman that was pregnant with someone else's baby. Perhaps I have been watching too many Maury's, but I think its great.

I like Seal, but Heidi has always annoyed the shit out of me. But they seem like a nice couple who genuinely love each other. Rare indeed.

I know someone in real life who also married a woman who was pregnant by someone else when they met.

I wonder how often things like this happen?

They're a wonderful couple. A lot of people say "He's so lucky," and he is, but she's lucky too.

And "A Change is Gonna Come" is a GORGEOUS song. Everyone go listen to it now. That is a command.
