Britney Spears court case ends in mistrial

Britney Spears has walked free from court after a jury failed to reach a verdict on charges of driving without a valid licence.

The judge declared a mistrial and dismissed the case against her after hearing that the jury was "hopelessly deadlocked" 10-2 in the singer's favour. Prosecutors said they would not pursue the matter further. Spears had faced a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The 26-year-old star was accused of driving without a California licence following an incident in Los Angeles last August, in which she scraped another car as she turned into a parking space. Spears argued that she had a Louisiana licence and considered the Southern state her permanent residence.

Her lawyer, Michael Flanagan, said outside court: "Today's outcome shows my client did nothing wrong. I consider this a victory. Britney was vindicated in that she took on a system that attempted to make an example of her celebrity."

Some jury members were swayed by Spears' fame, said foreman Gary Moy, 45, one of two jurors who believed her to be guilty. People have "a natural propensity to identify with celebrities, and I feel some of the jurors inserted their personal feelings", he said.

Prosecutor Michael Amerian, the Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney, complained: "It just goes to show how difficult it is to convict any celebrity of a crime here in Los Angeles. For whatever reason, jurors are reluctant to do that and I think history shows that."

The alleged driving offence occurred at a time when Spears' life appeared to be spiralling out of control, culminating in her admission to a psychiatric hospital. She is now on the comeback trail after cleaning herself up and will appear on British talent show X Factor in December to promote her new album.

Quit wasting my tax money in this shit. She had a valid license, even if it wasn't a California license. Fine her, tell her to get her Ca. license and end it there. I lived her for almost two years before I got a California drivers license.
