Default Scarlett Johansson attacks 'ageist' Hollywood

Rex Features

Scarlett Johansson has hit out at ageism in Hollywood.

The Lost In Translation star criticised the film industry for not treating older women with the same respect as men.

She told Hello!: "Women kind of wilt as men sort of achieve as they get older, like wine or whatever. It's like, 'Oh, she's past her prime and she can't play a sex symbol'.

"It's just a preconceived notion about women in general and particularly in this industry. It's a very vain, vain industry."

Johansson can next be seen in Woody Allen's Spanish-set comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

It's true and it's sad that society is that way.

Fucking Hollywood needs to give more roles to women.

And she's all of, like, 23, with a great career now.

STFU, ScarJo.

It's not that she's wrong, it's just....STFU is all.

If she could make her point without sounding like a pretentious high schooler I might take her seriously.

Here is a stellar quote I just read this morning...

"I'm not his muse. Every single junket that we've done so far (for Vicky Cristina Barcelona), we always get the muse thing and we always say no, it's not that way," Contactmusic quoted her as saying. "Woody and I both appreciate how wonderful it is to work with your friends, and it's fun and we always have a great time when we do it, we entertain each other, we understand each other and we poke each other," she added.

Yeah. No shit, SKANK!

As far as I know, she profits from this very vain industry. Hypocrite.
Hello mother fucker! when you ask a question read also the answer instead of asking another question on an answer who already contain the answer of your next question!

Tell that to Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, just to name a few.

Actually, much as I hate to agree with Scarlett, she's right. I was reading the SAG-provided statistics about it in my Screen Studies class a few weeks ago - women are cast in less than 40% of the Hollywood film/TV roles (and the percent of main roles played by women is far lower) and something like just 9% of film roles go to women aged over 40.

Hollywood is very male dominated behind-the-scenes, too. Only 6% of Hollywood films are directed by women, plus it's about 19% for female producers and 10% for female screenwriters.

...wait, I'm scaring myself out of my own career path here. That's just damn demoralising.

I don't think it has to do with a woman's age, I think it has to do with the lack of talent. A lot of these girls start out their careers JUST because they are hot. When that fades they have nothing left to offer, and therefore their workload takes a major nosedive.

That's just my opinion though.

That is a perfectly legitimate opinion and spot on. In my opinion.
That is why Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, etc. get nearly all of the older women parts.

She's got a valid point. I can name a few male sex symbols who are older, but no women.
But then, women are just seen as objects. Sad but true...its all about looks, not personality, not charisma. Not with women. They are judged on their bodies.

I think it has to do with the general male-dominance of Hollywood. I mean, 9% of roles written for women over 40?! That's including all the tiny, single scene cameo parts, too - fuck all would be main roles, or good roles.

It's not like hotness is to blame for the lack of women directors, screenwriters and such. It's utterly unbalanced and the opportunities for female actors, especially older actresses, aren't going to improve while almost every movie is directed, written, produced etc by men. I feel somewhat daunted.

Oh well. Maybe some of these women actors should step up and produce if they find it that big of an issue, otherwise they should probably quit griping and just count their millions.

I'm confused. Didn't you say you were becoming a journalist?
