Default Sammy Davis Jr's sad and pathetic end

BELOVED former Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr. died broke, in debt to the IRS, and left his estate in such a shambles that it still hasn't been straightened out.

And according to "Deconstructing Sammy" (due next month from Amistad/HarperCollins), by journalist Matt Birkbeck, Davis didn't have to die.

After a cancer diagnosis in August 1989, doctors recommended surgery on his throat that offered an 80 percent chance of survival. He opted instead for radiation, which had a slim 30 percent survival rate. Davis made his decision based on his dismal finances. If he couldn't sing, he reasoned, he couldn't make money.

    Among the book's other bombshells:

    * Following his divorce from May Britt in 1968, Davis was pressured into marrying a black woman. He wed Altovise Gore in 1970 and pressured her into participating in wild parties.

    * Among the many men Altovise befriended was former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, whom Davis met in the 1970s when Rumsfeld worked for the Nixon administration. Rumsfeld remained friendly with Altovise after the legendary entertainer's death, even to the point of calling her when she was living in poverty in Pennsylvania in 1993.

    * When Sammy's good friend and long-time conductor, George Rhodes, died in 1985, he asked another good friend, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, to give the eulogy. Jackson agreed but for a price: He demanded $5,000 in cash, four first-class plane tickets and two suites at the Four Seasons Hotel. Davis, who was broke, turned to bodyguard Brian Dellow, who took an advance off his credit card to pay Jackson's fee.

    * Despite more than $50 million in lifetime earnings, Davis died in 1990 some $15 million in debt, owing more than half to the IRS for investments in bogus tax shelters.

but he didn't love her! he was in love with the white woman and got flack for being with her in an extremely intolerant time.

it sounds to me that Sammy had a good heart and wanted to do the right thing, but just kept getting pushed around. poor guy. this is sad to hear.

JJ is an ass through and through. I've always had a soft spot for the rat pack. It's hard to ignore all of the bad shit they pulled but I still love them.

Jesse Jackson may use the title "Reverend", but he's with the Church of the Big Bucks and always has been. Does he do anything that doesn't line his already padded pockets?

JJ is nothing more than a silver tongued con man. The only people he ever cared about, aside from himself, were the ones printed on currency.

Pressured into marrying Altovise? A simple "no" would have put a stop to that.

Such a damn shame. Sammy was one of the most talented people
in the history of American (or even world) showbiz. I have always
found him a better singer than Sinatra (the Voice, give me a break),
he was an excellent danser, actor and impersonator. His live shows
were a roller coaster ride of all his talents. I'm sure he trusted people
too easily. I hate it when mega talents like him go broke and pre-
packaged and overproduced nitwits like the Shittneys, Hohans and
worse even Hiltons!!!! make multi million dollar careers without talent
    at all!!!!

I always thought the way Sammy had to live at the end was a disgrace.

And I don't even get shocked anymore about the hypocrisy of the Rev. Wrong Jesse Jackson. Charging Sammy to do a eulogy even though you knew he was broke. That's why Jesse's karma has been catching up to him lately.

I read Sammy's autobiography when I was a teenager and always had a soft spot for him after. They mean he was pressured into marrying Altovise. In those days you couldn't just disregard what the public thought of you.
If I can't be a good example, then let me be a horrible warning.

Sammy could've done worse than Altovise Davis. She was very pretty.

Hell yes to that. Sammy was multi-talented and undervalued, IMO. I'll take his voice and style over Sinatra's any day.

Very sad the way he had to live out the rest of his life. Explains some of the different sitcoms he showed up in late in life. Jesse Jackson is the lowest form of shit. To take advantage of someone who was having financial hardships...He deserves the very worst that life can give him. What an asshole!
