Default Whoopi Goldberg: Patrick Swayze was the reason I won Oscar

Whoopi: Swayze Is the Reason I Won Oscar

NEW YORK (AP) — Whoopi Goldberg says her friend Patrick Swayze — who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — is the reason why she won an Oscar for "Ghost."

"When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg recalled Thursday on ABC daytime talk show "The View."

Goldberg, who starred alongside Swayze in the 1990 film, earned a best supporting actress award for her portrayal of psychic Oda Mae, who helps slain businessman Sam Wheat (Swayze) communicate with his grieving fiancee and solve the mystery of his murder.

The 52-year-old actress-comedian said Swayze persuaded director Jerry Zucker to cast her in the film amid "some resistance." According to Goldberg, Swayze said, "I'm not making this movie unless you put Whoopi Goldberg in there."

Swayze, 55, has been undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, his representative Annett Wolf said Wednesday.
In a statement released by Wolf, Swayze's physician Dr. George Fisher said he was "optimistic" about the "Dirty Dancing" actor's prognosis for battling the disease: "Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far."

Goldberg said she hadn't yet spoken to Swayze about his health.

"We want you to feel better — we'll talk soon, I hope," she said. The Associated Press: Whoopi: Swayze Is the Reason I Won Oscar

Remember PS was one of the biggest movie stars in the world at that time after Dirty Dancing. He just probably felt that Whoopi would be the funniest and do the best job.

I'm not usually into 'soppy' movies, but this was great. Whoopi really added some humour to it, which it really needed. Another one on my list to watch again soon. I watched it so many times years ago, haven't seen it in years.

Nothing. She said she had never met him at the time, but he told the director he wouldn't do the movie unless they hired Whoopi for the part.

^That was really sweet of him. He was right, because she added a splash of humor to that movie, which it desperately needed.

I don't think he was miscast. I thought he did alright in the movie. Whoopi stole the show and made the movie, so everyone else paled in comparison. Except Demi because I don't think she can act much.
