Default Drew Barrymore makes $1 million charitable donation

Talk about a "big give": Drew Barrymore announced on Monday's Oprah Winfrey Show that she is donating $1 million to the World Food Programme to help feed children in Africa.

"I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," the actress said. "It helps them learn, stay healthy and sets them on track for a bright future."

Barrymore, 33, has worked with the charity since 2005 and became an Ambassador Against Hunger last year. She's taken two trips to Kenya to see the organization's work first hand.

"We have a dream ... to feed another 10 million hungry school children in Africa by Thanksgiving Day," said WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran, who also appeared on Oprah.

Awesome, that'll just about cover the cost of Whitless Houston's 'charitable' performance.

Honestly, isn't there a "Teach hungry people in Africa to fucking farm, plant fucking crops and drill for fucking water" charity?

He does have a point in that throwing money at the problem doesn't seem to be helping. The things that do any good are the people willing to go over and teach.

Theres a really good book out, Three Cups of Tea, that talks about the answer being in equal opportunity education. Educate both boys AND girls and suddenly real headway is made in these starving communities

i was worried i was gonna be the only one thinking that. there are families living paycheck to paycheck or even going without food, homeless, etc, and they give drew a big pat on the back for this. when is someone going to give back to our country? i mean, good for her that she's trying to do something, but Jesus, come on, ORCA, think about USA for once.

Well it's not just that.. I had a couple friends go to .. uh.. one of those unstable african countries that changes names every 3 seconds.. uganda maybe? Zimbabwe? Whatever, anyhow..

Basically he went down to install computer systems for some charity and was here for the better part of a year. He said that instead of a concerted, connected and overall strategy for charities down there, it's a hodgepodge of organizations that don't even talk to each other. He aid it's basically each charity on its own, and that all they do is give food handouts really.

He said it's gotten bad enough down there that the people have developed an almost total dependency on the agencies, that they don't know how to farm, or fish or support themselves because it's been a generation or 2 of handouts.

Seems kind of fucking stupid, it's an endless black hole. Teach them how to irrigate, how to grow crops, husband livestock, something!

Yes, we do. But it seems that helping anyone in our own country is very last century.

My my, didn't we all just dip our tongues in some acid today.

^there are many systems set up to help those our own country. Shelters, soup kitchens, free rehab, free needles/safe injection sites, drop off site for unwanted children, etc, etc.

Yeah, I know. But there are a lot that struggle just to stay open.

Good for Drew. Hopefully, we can start a charity that aims to teach impoverished people how to be truly self-sustaining.

No, it makes people feel better in a condenscending, "paternal" way (not necessarily saying this about Drew here). Those "poor" Africans can't do anything without outside help (sarcasm here).

Yes, there is plenty of suffering in Africa. But there's a lot of self sufficiency, wealth, and other things you never see in the news.
